3. Chapter 2

Dear Diary,

When I woke up today, it was the first time in a long time that I actually felt happy. I felt like I belonged. Today is a new year, and today is the day I show everyone that I’m still the same girl they knew before the accident. Such a gruesome topic to bring up. When my parents died, I thought everything was over, and that everything was gone. I’m the shell of the girl I once was. I feel unworthy of living. Maybe I should’ve died instead of… WHAT AM I THINKING? Mom and Dad would want me to be happy, not discussing this.

I stop writing. I throw the white, rusty book on my bed, not wanting to look at the words I’ve just written. I can’t think like this anymore. I have to stop feeling sorry for myself and just get on with my life. Mom and Dad would want me to be happy. They wouldn’t want me to feel sorry for myself. I run downstairs after getting dressed for school. “Good morning!” I say cheerfully. Aunt Mel notices my mood. “Wow! You seem happy.”

“Well, that’s because I am. It’s a new year, and a new me.” I smile. Zayn comes in the kitchen and rolls his eyes at me.

“Seriously?” He says.

“Yep! Nothing’s going to bring me down today.” I smile at him, and then hear the doorbell ring. Rose.

Upon getting into her car, I take a deep breath. “I missed you!” I hug her tightly. “How was your winter break?” She says. I gulp, remembering the pain I went through. Winter break was just a few days after the accident. Rose looks at me with concern in her face. “Come on, let's go to school!” I start walking with her, but she surprisingly pulls me back.

“Ash, you know you can tell me anything! I’m your best friend and I’ll always be here for you.” She smiles at me as I put my hand on her shoulder to return her loving gesture.

“Of course! You were there for me when I needed you the most. I told you I was okay, but you knew I wasn’t myself. You stayed with me through everything and I really appreciate that.” Rose smiles. “And if I was still upset about the whole thing, I would tell you.”

She looks at me with concern in her eyes. “You can still be upset; it’s normal to be upset about it.” I start walking to her car. Before I open the door to the passenger’s seat, I look at her and scream, “I’m fine Rose! I’m over it! Can’t we just stop talking about it! Today I woke up feeling happy, so why can’t I just stay happy for the rest of the day?” I sit down in the car and slam the door as Rose gets in the front to start driving to school. The drive was quiet and every now and then she would look at me. She could tell how I’m not over the accident at all. I have no clue how she could tell, but she could.

We arrive at school and get out the car. Rose starts walking away and I yell, “Rose!” She stops and opens her arms. I run to her and give her a hug as tears roll down my face. I whisper to her, “I’m sorry. I guess I’m not over it yet.” Rose whispers with some sort of concern in her voice.

“We’ll get through it together.” Rose’s family and mine are like one big, extended family. All our family members did everything together, so it’s been hard for her family too. She’s like the sister I never had. My parents were like her second parents and her parents were like my second ones. I’ve known Rose my whole life. Unexpectedly, the bell rings.

Rose pats my back and says, “Come on, let’s go to class.” Then, we start walking to class. BAM. I bang into someone and I fall to the floor and drop all my stuff. I look up and see a guy smiling, offering his hand to help me get up. I hold his hand and get up.

We start picking my stuff up. “I’m so sorry, it’s my fault. I wasn’t-” I look into his green, beautiful eyes. He’s super attractive. What am I thinking? “Don’t be silly, it’s my fault. Sorry. Are you okay?” He asks worriedly. “Yeah, I’m fine.” I smile. “I should get to class.” “It was nice meeting you.” He says as I walk away towards Rose. “Oh my god! You’re so clumsy.” Rose laughs as we walk into the class.

Everyone piles into the classroom one by one. I’m not really paying any attention to Rose since I see the new guy walk into class. A second later, some new girl walks in and sits down next to him. Once they start talking, I look at the girl. She looks like she could be related to him. All of the sudden, the girl glares at me. she must’ve realized I was staring at her. She stares back at me with a shocked expression on her face, like she’s not expecting to see me. Rose looks at me curiously.

“Why do you keep staring at the new girl?”

I whisper, “She keeps looking at me, it’s kinda creepy.” Rose rolls her eyes.

“Just ignore her, class is about to start.” I feel uncomfortable as I feel a cold hand on my shoulder. I turn around and see the new girl.

“Do I know you from somewhere? You look kind of familiar.”

“Sorry, I think you’ve mixed me up with someone else.” “Oh, I’m sorry about that. I’m Skylar King.” she says, smiling at me.

“I’m Ashley Pierce,” I smile as Rose looks at me with confusion on her face. “This is Rose Palmer, my best friend.” “Nice to to meet you. Maybe we can hang out during lunch?” she exclaims. Rose looks at me, then back at Skylar.

“That would be great.” They start talking with each other but I’m not paying attention to them. I’m too busy looking at the new boy. He sees me looking at him and he smiles. I feel heat on my cheeks. “Oh! that’s my brother, Elliot.” Skylar smirks. “Huh? Um, yeah, he seems nice.” “Eli! Come over here!” Skylar says and motions Eli to come here to say hello to us. He stands up from his chair and begins to make his way towards us.

“Eli, this is Ashley. That’s Rose. Ashley and Rose, this is Elliot.” “It’s nice to meet you.” Elliot shakes my hand.

I don’t realize I’m blushing until he shakes Rose’s hand and she says, “It’s nice to…” She freezes, looks at me and then back at Elliot and Skylar.

“What’s wrong?” I asked worriedly.

“Nothing Ash, it’s nothing.” She replies, no emotion on her face. Saved by the bell.

“Come on let’s go to lunch! Nicole, Claire, and Cameron are probably waiting for us!” I say as Elliot and Skylar start walking to the cafeteria. Rose stays frozen with a confused face. “Come on Rose!” I giggle and pull her by the hand.
