The Mystics

Life wasn’t so easy for me. Especially, when everything you had or loved...was gone...forever. Oh sure, my life was just fine before, but what if the family you loved so dearly, and so much care for, your loving younger brother that always looked up to you and worried about you every time you’d leave; what if it was all gone, in an instant. Nothing’s the same anymore. Everything has changed...for good. Now that life’s taken its turn. There’s no turning back now. Love sickens me, or so I thought. The last time I opened up my heart and let my guard down, love left me in the shadows. I don’t feel anything anymore. All that’s in my heart now, is anger and hatred.

3. A Connection?

“What the heck was that!?” Shadow’s eyes open wide as he sits up.

“An apple. I’m sorry.” I help him up and pick up the apple.

“It’s okay, just give me a warning next time please.”

“Well you were asleep. But to be fair, it was kinda funny. Haha!”

“Oh why you little-” He splashes me with water. “Now we’re even.”

I shake the water off of me and give in. “Alright, alright. We’re even...for now.”

“What was that?” Shad looks at me and somewhat smiles.

“Oh nothing.” Thinking of our next course of action, I turn away smirking. “Heh. Anyway, we need to take our first course of action. Should we stay here another night and begin our voyage at dawn? Or gather little resources and head at sunset?”

“Honestly Phee, I think we need to gather resources now and get packed up, then head for Dragon Drop at dawn tomorrow. Does that sound like a plan?”

“Yeah. Let’s start with you going out and seeing if you can gather some meat. I’ll go get more apples and try to find some other fruits.”

“Got it, but no more throwing fruit at me, okay?”

“Fine. Haha. Good luck.”

“You too, Phoenix.” He leaves with his sword and comes back about 3 hours later with a bag full of meat.

I turn around as my eyes open wide at the huge bag. “Wow...that’s a lot of food. Well at least we won’t run out for awhile. The rest of our trip is going to take us 2 days on foot.”

“Ya. How are your materials coming along?”

“I got some wood to camp for the night if needed and some apples and potatoes. Also, some cloth just in case of any accidents. Anything else we might need?”

“Well, extra weapons, armor, probably more food when we get to Dragon Drop, more cloth for any gashes we get, and maybe...” Shad thinks for a second then looks at me. “Do you have anymore ideas?”

“Potions, blankets, and our cloaks.”

“Well duh. I never take mine off.”

“Neither do I. Come on, let’s just get everything packed.”

“Alright. So what goes in where exactly?”

“The food goes into this smaller satchel and the other materials go in that one.”

“Okay.” He actually works pretty fast and gets most of it packed before I even grab anything. “And done.” I look over at the bags, everything is packed and put away.

“You sure do work fast, Shad.”

“Ya, where do you think I got it from? Come on, I gotta make our dinner for tonight.”

“Shadow, you don’t have to do everything around here, you know. I can help too.”

“Yes, I know, but you brought me apples last night. Besides, you need to relax.”

“Fine, I’ll relax, but what about you? Don’t you need to settle down as well?”

“Nah. I’m perfectly fine, don’t worry about me. And besides, I never can relax anyway, so it would be no use.”

“I see. Just take care of yourself, please. You worry me anyhow. Honestly Shad, I-I care about you very much. Please watch yourself, promise me.” I look at him seriously.

“I promise, Phee.” He stares at me with his sparkly dark blue eyes. I know love is my enemy, but what if...I was wrong?

After we eat, I head out onto the ledge, to think to myself. There’s something that has been bothering me for as long as I can remember. Is it even worth it? To go seek vengeance on King Luke and Hades? Does it even change anything? Or is this all going to result in utter chaos? As the sun goes down, I hear faint footsteps behind me.

“Hey Phee, can I come sit beside you?”

“Um sure.” Shadow sits down beside me and looks up at the stars.

“Are you okay, Phoenix?” He puts his hand on my shoulder and looks at me in the eye.

“No, I have too much stuff going on in my head right now and I miss my family like crazy. All this is worrying me terribly and I can’t get away from it.” I try to hold back the tears from coming out, but they break through somehow.

“Hey, hey, it’s okay, it’s okay. Just let it out.” While tears are streaming from my face, I feel warm, muscular arms wrap around me, pulling me into a hug. I just cry into Shad’s chest as he holds onto me firmly. Even though my tears die down finally, he still holds me, as if for extra comfort. His body was so warm, so muscular, his soft touch around my back, I started to fall asleep.
