“My God what have you been doing?’

“Oh I fell mother, we were climbing trees; you know how it is dad.’

The voices in his head were telling him to lie.

 Who were you with?’

I was with Brian Sumner dad and a couple of his mates; we were playing Tarzan through the trees.’

“You ought to be more careful; you could end up injuring yourself.’

“I will dad.’

Benny went outside and sat on the step cleaning off the mud from his boots; he heard the voices in his head again telling him that he’d done well and that everything was going to be fine. That night he counted his savings since working as an apprentice joiner for Henry Percy’s on Howdon Road he had managed to save ten pounds.

He needed three shillings and sixpence from his box but he took five so that he could buy Martha some fish and chips when they walked back home to Shields Road. They lived around the corner from “The Raby a public house popular with the locals. Further down was Jackson’s another pub In fact there were pubs all the way down Shields Road. Lacey’s barbershop was where he would be going tomorrow. Benny hoped that no one was in who knew his father.

Benny ate his tea with gusto then it was bible reading time. He took the bible into his room and sat on his bed. Benny opened the book and read the chapter in Corinthians 10:13 “No Temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful and he will not let you be tempted beyond your own ability; but with temptation he will also find a way of escape; that you will be able to endure it.

Thessalonians: For this is the will of God; your sanctification that you abstain from sexual immorality; that each one of us knows how to control their own body in holiness and honour. Not in passion of lust like the Gentiles, who did not know God.

Benny read on. If they cannot exercise self control then they should marry; for it is better to marry than burn with passion.

Benny knew that he loved Martha with a passion and she him.’

They weren’t old enough to marry yet or even have sex. They had both sinned in that respect. Benny tried to justify what he had done by reading the passages again. He knew he could not exercise self control; when he was with Martha he did not care he wanted her as much as she wanted him. He would wait until they were both sixteen then he would ask his parents if they could marry.

On his way to work the next morning he could think about nothing else; the voices grew stronger in his head and he found himself talking to them.

“What was that said his work colleague who overheard him.’

“Just thinking out loud Graham Benny replied.’

“Well come and give me a hand to get this on the lorry will yer.’

“Aye alright.’

Benny put down the wood clamp that he was using to secure a joint on the table he was making and went to help his work mate. They loaded up the lorry with some of the furniture that they had made that week. Today it was Friday and it was pay day. He would have the weekend all to himself and he already had made plans in his head as to what he was going to do. He went to the local library in his lunch break and found a book on sexual positions and made little sketches. Benny had always been good at art and liked to paint like the old masters like Michael Angelo, Botticelli, and
