the earth. For I am the Lord who brought you from the land of Egypt to be your God, thus you shall be holy, for I am holy.

Be holy yourselves in all your behaviour, righteous are you oh Lord, and upright are your judgments. You have commanded your testimonies in righteousness and exceeding faithfulness. Consider members of your holy body as dead to immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed which amount to idolatry. It is because of these things that the wrath of God will come down upon the sons of disobedience and in them you also once walked when you were living in them. I don’t have a high priest who cannot sympathise with all of our weaknesses but one who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin.

Father Peter was saying these things more as a confession of his own immorality than those before him; but the words were powerful, He had cleans himself, God had tested his faith he thought as he asked the others to pray for the sins of others.

At breakfast Father Peter explained where they would be visiting; “I would like to visit the church of St Paul for confession and if anyone wishes to come with me they would be welcome.’

Peter noticed that Iris had missed breakfast and he didn’t want to go to her room again. Peter gathered his rucksack after changing from his robes and fixed his dog collar onto his shirt. There was no sign of iris on the bus as it pulled away. Peter assumed that she still wasn’t herself and that she had decided to stay behind. He explained to the other ladies that Iris wasn’t feeling well and that they should all pray for her.

After visiting the castle they stopped again like the day before and walked to the church. Father Michael Flannigan was the Monsignor at St Pauls and welcomed them. Ailsa had rung the church after breakfast to tell the monsignor that they were coming.

Father Asked if the Monsignor would take confession for anyone who wanted it. Two of the ladies went into the small cubicle one after the other and then closed the blue velvet curtain. Father Peter went in next and sat down. He explained that he’d been tempted last night by a young lady but had resisted temptation.

“That is good my son you didn’t succumb to the sins of the flesh; God has surely tested you.’

“I did have impure thoughts Father, said Peter.’

“Yes; a minor transgression, three hail Mary’s and two our fathers.’

Peter came out of the confessional feeling relieved of his sins.’

The monsignor had invited the young priest and his guests to tea. Some of his congregation came along and were chatting to the others about the retreat as they drank tea and ate small triangular sandwiches made with sardine paste; and some home made fruit cake.

They spent over two hours as the monsignor showed them around the church grounds. He pointed out the old cemetery which dated back to the 16th century. There had been some repairs done to the roof of the church over the years but other than that the building itself was in good shape.

Father Peter expressed his gratitude to the monsignor before they all left. They walked back to the coach which then took them back to the retreat.

Ailsa Oxbrough had come along with them today and left her husband to tidy up and prepare dinner for the guests. Tonight there was a cream of vegetable soup followed by pork chops, creamed potatoes carrots, cabbage, and gravy. For pudding tonight was apple tart and custard. Ailsa had asked Charles not to disturb Iris as she wasn’t
