No Room for Love

Eli and Brooklyn were everyone's ideal couple. They didn't have it all, but they had each other... until they didn't.

"Bad time?" Sarah asked, putting a manicured hand on her hip.

"Is it ever a good time?" Brooklyn rolled her eyes.

"I guess not. Look, I didn't know that you were Eli's girlfriend at the Christmas party. Now that I do know, we need to have a little talk."

Brooklyn opened the car door and reached inside for the gift bag. "What makes you think I want to talk to you?" She shut the door and turned to walk past Sarah, but Sarah stepped in front of her, blocking her path.

"You want to talk to me because there are some things that you don't know about your boyfriend that you might like to know. Eli isn't the man you think he is. You think he actually quit his job for you?" Sarah let out a sickening laugh. "Honey, he can't quit his job. Eli is under a very strict contract. Your sweet boyfriend has a past ... and to keep his reputation from being tarnished, he has to work very hard for me and my father's company. Otherwise we'd expose him. So you see, I basically own him. I just let him wander a little too far off of his leash this time."

Brooklyn stood there shocked for a second before composing herself. "You're a liar."

As soon as the words left her mouth, she heard footsteps coming toward them.

"Hey, babe. What's taking so lo-" Eli stopped in his tracks when he saw Brooklyn next to his truck with Sarah.

"Um... what's going on?" Eli asked, rubbing the back of his neck.

"Eli, honey" Sarah ran her fingers through her hair. "I was just telling Brooklyn that you decided to come back to the firm because you had to finish your contract. Isn't that right?"

Sarah glared at Eli and he knew exactly what she was referring to, and he couldn't let Brooklyn know what was going on. Remembering that he had no real control over his own life, he had to do what Sarah said.

"Oh, yeah... I meant to tell you about that, Brook." Eli lowered his head and rubbed the back of his neck.

Sarah snickered as she walked up to Eli, putting a hand on his chest. "I want the next dance." She kissed him on the cheek and began walking back toward the building. Before she was completely out of sight she called over her shoulder, "Say goodbye to your friend."

Now Brooklyn stood alone in the parking lot with Eli, not knowing what to say.

"Listen Brook... I really care about you. But I don't know if we are right for each other."

"You're kidding, right?" Brooklyn stepped closer to Eli.

"I would love for this to last longer, but I don't want to break your heart."

Brooklyn looked into Eli's eyes for a long moment. "Well I guess it's too late for that, huh?" She put the gift bag into his hands and walked off. She heard Eli yell "I'm sorry", but she didn't turn back. She kept walking as she dialed the number for a taxi.
