Winter and other poems...

11. 9. How to read a poem

I ask them to take a poem

And throw it in the bin

Like a piece of rubbish.

Or poke a fingers against its lungs.

I say release havoc into the poem

And watch its rage burn,

Or spy between the poems walls

And wait for the perfect opportunity.

I want them to bike

Across the surface of the poem

And shake their head at the authors name.

But all they want to do is

Nurse the poem back to life

And guiltily get a confession

Out of it.

They begin to heal the

Poem and find out what

Meaning it disguises.
