The Skin Shop

The story which is semi autobiographical tells the story of Ralph Mason Growing up in Collingwood Terrace in North Shields in 1948. it is a story of Hardship, poverty, love, and friendship just after the Second World War. Some names have been changed and I have used some poetic licence to bring the story to back to life as some of the places talked about in this story are no longer with us. "The Skin Shop is one boys journey into manhood.

back door and opened it he was just about to run out when the stick came down over Terry’s face he had a big welt coming up under his eye as he got into the lane. The fat woman was still chasing him down the lane as Tony Santos went inside her back yard fastened the bolt and then jumped onto the wall and climbed back over. Terry had scarpered and Mrs Jennings came back. She was out of breath but shook the stick at them all and threatened to call the police. She turned away and tried to open the door and it was locked now she was locked out.

“Open this bloody door this minute or I’m going to the police do you hear me.’

The kids all laughed at her as she tried to get up via the dustbin but it keeled over. She landed on her bum and the cobble stones were hard as hell.

She cried out in pain but the kids laughed all the more at her.

“You,’ she pointed at Manny; get that door open for me.’

Sorry Missus my mam said I was never to go near that fat wife that lives at number 26.’

“She did, did she; well just wait until I see your mother she will get a piece of my mind.’

Mrs Jennings got to her feet then walked down the lane and all the way round to the front of her house then let herself in with the key on the piece of string. She was livid.

Once inside the safety of her yard she began hurling abuse at the kids.

It was fifteen minutes later that Terry returned with a bag with something inside.

All the kids gathered around as Terry showed them what was in it.

The smell from the bag was awful. He picked up a dead cat that he had found. It was covered in maggots and he threw it over the wall and it hit Mrs Jennings on the head and the maggots began to crawl on her head and down her front into her huge bosom.

There was an almighty scream from inside as she opened the back door in absolute panic and began taking off her clothes in the lane in an effort to get rid of the maggots that were crawling all over her. She stood there screaming the place down with just a slip on and a huge pair of pink bloomers as everyone laughed at her again then ran off down the lane.

“Just wait until my man comes home you’ll see you little buggers she sobbed.’

”Where are we going to go now said Tony Santos to Ralph.’

“Let’s go and get our bogies and have races down Tanners bank.’

“Great idea.

“Can we have a ride as well asked Alice Walker?’

“Aye but you’ve got to push us back up when we get to the bottom.’

They all ran home to get the go carts then met up moments later. The lads all got on as the girls pushed them to the bank top. The five bogies lined up as the lads took hold of the steering rope and placed their feet on either side of the front wheels.

When they were all ready the girls gave them a push and down the bank they went over the cobbles. Two of the go carts crashed into each other half way down but it was Manny, Tony, and Ralph who went ever faster down the bank. The hardest part was steering around the corner towards the Golden Fleece.

Ralph had the better turn and he sailed past the other two until he stopped near the ferry landing.

“One to me said Ralph as he stuck his arms up in the air in a victory salute.

He walked back up the bank as the two carts that had crashed were trying to straighten the wheels that were now buckled. They could still be ridden but they wouldn’t go as fast.

Once at the top Jan and Alice made for Ralph’s bogie they sat on with their knees bent; Jan held onto Ralph and Alice onto Jan.
