22. Chapter Twenty Two

Jason's POV

"Did you hear me?"

"Babe," Talia sat on the couch with the paper in her hands staring down at it with wide eyes. She didn't answer me, didn't look up, didn't even make any move to look at me.

"Talia, you have to breathe," I said as her chest heaved up and down, faster and faster each time. It's about twenty minutes into finding out Robert is, in fact, my son and I, myself am shocked. Not only shocked that he's my kid, but shocked that my mom would keep this information from me.

"I need the truth," Talia's voice finally said.

"How many girls?"

"How many girls, Jason? How many girls could this have happened to? And I don't want no bullshit lie either. The truth, the real truth."

"I don't know what you're talking about,"

"Like hell you don't! Tell me the damn truth before I lose my fucking mind! How many girls have you gotten pregnant!"

"Apparently only Carly and you," I lied.

"You always call me a hypocrite, but here you are, lying right to my face about something that is major. Jason, I need to know."

"I told you, only you and Carly,"

"Grace," I turned my head around to the doorway. "Grace Shopp in Junior year before he met you. She had a miscarriage but she was gonna give it up for adoption."

"Wait, where have I heard that name from?"

"The day before we went to Miami last year. We were talking about it."

"Oh my God," I groaned.

"I walked in on you two talking about it. Oh my God,"

"I'll tell you the truth about every single girl I slept with, I'll tell you, I swear. I'll write down a list of the ones I remember," I said.

"I can't... I can't believe this."

"Me either,"

"You not only got me pregnant, but you got Carly and Grace pregnant. She was one of Amber's friends."

"I know,"

"You knew!?" I nodded. "When did this happen? And Jason, I swear, if you leave out one detail I'm done. For good this time. I don't care if you try to get me back, I'm taking Tommy and leaving,"

"It was... January of junior year-"

"I moved in with you in January. Jesus Christ, the girl I walked in on! That was her!?"

"Can you let me finish?"

She only nodded not saying anything else. "I went to a party with Nick and we got shit drunk. Grace was there, drunk as all hell, drinking and taking shots. And we danced a little we played a couple games and one thing led to another and well, she ended up getting pregnant at a party she never remembered."

"You... you and her.... did she give her consent, Jason?"

"She doesn't remember,"

"Oh my God. That's a form of rape, you know that!?"

"Yes, Talia, I know. But there was someone who was there-"

"You recorded it!?"

"No! God, no! Would you let me finish!? I'm trying to do everything I can right now to make you stay with me!"

"There was someone there who witnessed everything going on downstairs at the party and they said she agreed to it, but I never said yes because she dragged me up the stairs,"

"So... she raped you?"

"Yes, wait, no. Wait. God, I don't know! I'm still processing the whole Robert is my kid, thing!"

"Grace was someone who was like you, Talia. Started out as a nerd and found her spot with a crowd. She was a bet for Jason to do and he did it."

"Jason, please, I need to know."

"Now what do you need to know!"

"Was I ever a bet?"

"Please, tell me the truth."

"Natalia, I swear to you, you were never a bet. My mom never even found out about Grace because she lost the baby not even three weeks into her pregnancy."

"Am I off the hook?"

She laughed, "Fuck no,"

"Why would your mom lie to you?" Jackson asked.

"The same reason I would lie for Tommy," Talia replied.

We both looked at her.

"To protect him. As a mother now, I see things differently. I would do anything to protect the truth from him and that's what Mrs. Summers was doing. Protecting her baby from the truth. Robert is his child and there's nothing anyone can do about it,"

"Or, we rip up the letter and pretend it never happened,"

"Jason, we can't do that. You know about him now."

"So? I've known about him for a while now,"

"Yeah, but you didn't think he was yours."

"It doesn't matter! Yes, he's my kid, but honestly, he doesn't know who I am to him and that's fine. Keep it that way. Keep it as his mom's old flame. I have my own kid now with someone who I'm happy with and I want to keep it that way."

Talia sighed, "someone get me my pills," Jackson dismissed himself from the living room, taking the opportunity to get out while he could in this time.

"What are we gonna do, Talia?"

"There's nothing to do, Jason. Either you own up to being Robert's father or you dismiss it all together. I, unfortunately, can't make that decision up for you."

"I want to dismiss it, Talia. I don't want it."

"Then dismiss it. I can't promise you life would ever be the same though,"

"That's okay, but I'm happy right now with our small family. I don't want another kid right now, T, I don't."

"Okay, Jason, calm down."

"I can't, Talia."

"Yes, yes you can. I'm not freaking out anymore, see?" Jackson came back in the room with a bottle of water and his fingers closed into a fist.

"Thank you," Talia whispered, putting the pill in her mouth and swallowing it down with the water. Anxiety pills. Only taken for when she feels it coming on.

"Thank you, Jackson, but I think Jason and I need some alone time,"

"I understand. Call me later, okay?" Talia nodded and continued to run her hands through my hair.

"I'm not happy but I'm surprised. But I'm not mad. Im calm, Jason, as should you. Okay?" I nodded. "Remember what I told you? Even if he is your son, I still love you. You're mine and no one can take that away,"

I took a deep breath and nodded, "I love you,"
