“That I would pay to see Mick.’

When would I find out Tom if I have the job?’

“In a week or so I would think.’

“I can’t believe this; I’ve gone from a barrow boy to a fruit wholesaler.’

“Keep the mason’s under your hat alright.’

My lips are sealed matey.’

Just then both their rods went and they jumped out and ran to the rod stand.

“Fish on shouted Tom as he wound his multiplier reel for all it was worth.’

I think I’ve got a codling on here matey its diving for the bottom and trying to get me in a snag. Keep you rod up mate said Mickey as he too was winding his line in at a great rate of knots.

“As the line got nearer there was an obvious bend in Tom’ rod.’

The excitement grew as the two men battled with the fish.

The two of them got into the van and Tom started her up as they broke into song. “When the boat comes in” had never been sung sweeter as the two men drove up tanner’s bank back home.

Three weeks after ringing Harvey Smith, Tom’s permit to enter the lodge was accepted after a vote took place. Then he had to accept an apprentice degree.

He was then brought blindfolded walking literally in the light of his brothers and brought to full Masonic light after swearing an oath on his knees at the altar.

The secrets of the brotherhood were never to be revealed.

Two months later Mickey Binks underwent the same process.

Neither men spoke of it even to their own parents.

The two men no longer wore the clothes of the teddy boy era but wore smart suits and never wore jeans even for work. Their hair was neatly cut and their shoes highly polished when they went out. They frequented the lodges around Tynemouth and Whitley bay.
