25. Twenty-Four

“You think you have a plan?” Robb asks. I nod in response. “Tell me.”

“It’s not fully thought out, but I have the basics of it,” I tell him, sitting on the table so we’re nearly equal in height. “Lucifer told me what the seals were, after the horsemen. I take it Death hasn’t arrived yet, but even if he has, we can try and stop the seals. The fifth one involves martyrs. All we have to do is figure out how he’s going to try and get them and stop them from committing suicide. I’m making it sound easier than it ever will be, but somehow, we could do this. We just have to figure out how the seals will work and we stop them.”

Robb thinks it through. “But how do you suggest we stop martyrs from committing suicide?”

“I don’t know, this is just an undeveloped idea, Robb,” I say. “The other thing is; Lucifer wants me to help him. If I get my body back, go to him, find out what’s going to happen, I could sneak back here and we can stop him. It’s not all doom and gloom from the beginning. This could work if we execute it properly.”

“Try selling that to Isaac, and if it works, then I will literally give you a medal. He won’t buy it, nor will Mia. They’re determined not to give you away to Lucifer literally or figuratively,” Robb says. “And I don’t know if I can deal with him having his demonic fingers on you again, whether it be like that or not, I don’t want him anywhere near you.”

“Robb, it’s not as simple as that. I won’t fall for it again, and I want to stop him, you think I would crumble at the final hour?” I ask.

I watch him get up from the sofa and approach me, his eyes staring into Nicole’s, looking for me in here.

“No, I don’t think you will, but I refuse to take the risk, Nay. After I lost you the first time, I won’t lose you again. I refuse to let him near you, or even look at you until he’s lost this war. You’re my wife, and I will not lose you again. He killed you and our child, he will not win again,” he says.

“So you think I shouldn’t have my body back either?” I ask.

“No, I don’t know,” he says. “On a selfish level, I think you should, but on a logical level, I’m not sure.”

“That’s good enough for me, I think I should have it back.”

“I better go pick the other two up. You’ll be okay on your own?”

I nod. “Yeah, I’ll be fine.”

    “You sure?”

“Robb, go pick them up, please,” I sigh in annoyance, putting the kettle on. I pour the tea and take the milk out of the fridge, waiting for it to brew.

    “Ah, Nicole Jacobs.”

I freeze, my head snapping up. I don’t even have to turn around to know who’s standing behind me; Lucifer.

“Nicole Jacobs, whose parents are worried sick about her not coming home. Luckily, they have the initiative to phone the sixth form and they know she turned up to college this morning. They have tried texting you, phoning you, but apparently to no avail. So, tell me, Nicole, why have you not returned home?” Lucifer asks, stepping forward towards me. I take a step back, but the bench is in the way so I am stuck.

He chuckles when I don’t say anything more. “Tell me, how long has your… friendship with Robb, Mia and Isaac been going on? How long did it take you to get over this Danny boy and this Dylan? You cannot have been friends with them for long? What attracted you to befriend them, when you barely even spoke to them before this weekend?”

Shit, he knows. He knows, and there is nothing I can do about it. Robb is out; Isaac and Mia are at college. The fuck am I meant to do about this shit?

“What is it to do with you? I don’t even know who you are!” I exclaim, still keeping up the game regardless. He might be tricking me, I don’t know, so what’s another lie?

“Tell me, Nicole, how do you not know of me when we got acquainted the other day when I came in here looking for your friend Naomi?” Lucifer asks, standing in front of me with no gap. His eyes loom down into me, and in that single look, I know that he does actually know. There’s no more pretending, he knows the truth and he’s waiting for me to give up first. Well, fuck that, he’ll have to tell me he knows.

“I haven’t seen her since before she died, I told you that! Please leave me alone!” I plead, feigning the tears that are rolling down my eyes. I’ve let Nicole’s fright come through and be mixed with a little of my own, and my anger. There’s no way he’s winning this one.

“No, you might not have, but I know you saw her soul, Nicole,” Lucifer says with a sly smile. “I know she came to you, Nicole Jacobs, and she asked you to let her soul into you. I know you gave her permission, and I know she’s in there. I know you’re in this body, Naomi. I am not as stupid as you think I am, so you can speak to me.”

I keep quiet, as does Nicole. The tears are still forcing their way down my face and my hands are shaking. He still looms over me, staring at me, trying to force me out to speak to him. He reaches out a hand and places it on Nicole’s cheek. I let her shudder become apparent, for the fright of him is ridiculous. I know he wouldn’t hurt her, because he knows I’m in here, and he wouldn’t hurt me whether he could or not.

“Naomi Hart, I know you are in there, and I am not leaving until you make yourself known to me. Why this girl, hmm? Is it because she is so opposite to you that you thought I would not notice? Is it because she is your friend? Or is it because you tried so hard to get away from me that you found the first willing person? You should have known better than to come here, Naomi. You should have chosen someone unknown to you and your friends, someone away from here and you should not have come back here. It was the most stupid thing you could have done to get away from me, Naomi,” Lucifer says. I still keep silent, letting him touch me, letting him inspect Nicole. He won’t get anything from me, or Nicole. He won’t because I won’t let him. I’ll keep silent like this until the guys get back, and then I know Robb will go completely mental, and then maybe Lucifer will be distracted enough not to mention it again and he’ll piss off for a while so we can regroup. After this, I know this is completely useless. I can’t keep up the act if he knows. I will just get my own body back and let Nicole go back to her life. It’s unfair on her, on me and on Robb, Mia and Isaac.

“I wonder how Robb has taken it, how he has dealt with his wife being in another woman’s body, most likely not very well, has he not? I wonder how well he took the news that he would have been a father,” Lucifer chuckles and I know he’s trying to make me angry so his suspicions can be confirmed, but I’ve done it before and I can do it now; I remain silent and blank.

“I also wonder how he took to the news that the Devil had taken advantage of his wife. Hmm, his face the other day was such a picture. It told a thousand words, as they say. Poor boy, such a waste,” Lucifer carries on. I just look down at where his hand is now on the tip of Nicole’s neck. “I also wonder how Naomi took, or will take, to the news that he has a new girlfriend. I bet not very well. She didn’t seem happy, when she found out that I was real and not a myth as they say.”

I can’t do this to her any longer. When Lucifer has left and the others are back, they are taking me to my body and I will dig it up if I have to. I need it back. I can’t put Nicole through the same crap Lucifer put me through. No way, she deserves better than that.

“What the Hell is going on?”

The three of them walk in to see Lucifer holding me by the throat. More like caressing my throat, but equally, I’m being held against my will, so technicalities don’t really work.

“Get away from her! She has nothing to do with you!” Isaac yells, trying to keep up the pretence.

“Don’t you worry your little head boy, I already know that is a lie,” Lucifer announces. I watch Isaac’s composure stay in place and never faltering, just in case Lucifer is playing tricks. I could literally kiss Isaac here and now for trying and never giving up.

“I also am aware of the fact that inside of Miss Nicole here is actually Naomi Hart, my wife…”

“She is not your wife,” Robb snaps and I give him a pleading look. It’s when I spy Anna standing with Mia that I just feel like giving up. I thought we were going somewhere, moving on, but apparently not.

“Oh, but she is, and I know she is in there, I just need Naomi to come out to see me,” Lucifer croons and turns his head to look at me. “Though she seems to have gone mute. Maybe one of you could get her to speak.

“Why don’t you just let her go?” Mia suggests.

“I simply cannot let her go,” Lucifer scoffs, looking back at me, his eyes moving up and down to try and will me to the forefront of Nicole’s head. “I need to see Naomi, I need to see it and I need to see her. You have no idea what I have been through.” He strokes Nicole’s cheek and I feel her shivering under his touch, her entire being scared out of her mind. I don’t blame her; this is completely crazy.

The desperation showing in the vessel’s eyes make him look like he’s having a true breakdown, going crazy with the prospect of having Naomi out of his sight for more than a moment. The Hell is Lucifer on?

“You’re sick! Naomi isn’t here, she hasn’t been here since you tore her from us September the eighth! Leave Nicole alone, she has absolutely nothing to do with any of this!” Mia yells, standing in front of Robb to stop him from going completely batshit crazy.

“I am not sick, Amelia, I am seeing beyond the completely ludicrous act you four have going on right now, or should I say, you six?” Lucifer chuckles. I glance sideways at Robb, who’s staring between me and Lucifer, trying to decide what to do.

“We literally don’t know what you’re talking about, just let her go!” Isaac steps forward, standing within a few inches of Lucifer and I. I look down at my where Lucifer’s hand is still sitting on Nicole’s neck. I close my eyes and inhale, knowing I have to keep completely silent. I know he knows about it, and there is nothing I can do about that, but at least, for now, if I don’t say a word, it might buy us a little bit more time.

Lucifer’s hold on me suddenly drops and his focus moves to Robb, who’s just standing in the middle of the room, glaring daggers. He stands right in front of Robb as Mia approaches me, blocking my view.

“Boy, you think you can trick me, you think you can hide her in there, well you can think again,” Lucifer growls.

    “You okay Nicole?” Mia asks.

    “Yeah,” I nod.

“You killed my wife and you killed my unborn child,” Robb challenges and I see Mia’s confused face looking straight ahead, keeping her composure in case anything happens. “You will pay you arsehole.”

“Oh, so you know, do you?” Lucifer laughs. “So she has visited here, because the last time I checked, you didn’t know about that nugget of information.”

“No, she hasn’t, I read her diary,” Robb snaps.

“And what, you put two and two together, did you? Oh, Robb, you little naïve boy, I am not fooled. I know she is in there, and I will get it out of you all, whether you wish it or not,” Lucifer smirks and takes a step back and turns back to face me. “Don’t you worry, Naomi, I will be back for you, and I will get you back, because you will help me bring the apocalypse to Earth.”

“Naomi is not here,” Mia sighs in annoyance.

Lucifer just ignores her and carries on: “And when I do come back, before I take you with me, I will kill your precious ‘husband’ as you so call him. I will make him suffer, and I will force you to watch, so you can see how this,” he gestures around him at the general house and people in it. “will all finish, once and for all. There will be no more fleeing from me, and there will be no more whining and waning about your precious Robb. He will die, and he will suffer. No one crosses me.”

    And with that, he’s gone.
