17. Chapter Seventeen

Emma's P.O.V.

"I was going to knock, you didn't have to come outside," an Irish accent said.

"Niall!? What are you doing here!?," I asked, running to him and giving him a hug.

"I decided to stop by, and I also need a place to I stopped by here," he smiled.

"How did you know where I live!?," I asked.

"Em...forgive me for stalking, but I got a couple of FBI people to find out where you live, through your social media," he said, chuckling.

"You  creep!," I said, laughing.

"Might seem like I am," he said, laughing too.

I shook my head.

"Of course you can stay here! We have an extra room for a special guest like you," I smiled.

"Thank goodness. I was thinking far worse," he said.

"Sleeping on the floor, the ceiling, the basement, the attic, up against the wall," he said, taking his suitcase out of the back of the car.

"The ceiling?," I said, trying hard not the laugh.

He shrugged.

I grinned and he smiled.

"Is this....your car?," I asked.

"Well yes. But this one's rented, but I have a car just like this one in California and one in London, and one in Ireland," he said, then chuckled.

"Oh interesting," I said, walking to my car and grabbing my suitcase.

"Did you just get back?," Niall asked.

"Yes, literally like forty-five-ish minutes ago," I said, leading him inside.

"Wowza! What a nice place!," he smiled, looking around.

"Yeah, it's a bit messed but cause my roommate and her boyfriend...well...never mind," I said, deciding it wasn't the best subject on the planet right now.

"They had more important matters?," Niall asked, wiggling his eyebrows.

"Yes, that," I said.

We both laughed.

"What about you? How's your thing with that Harry guy going along?," Niall asked.

"We decided to try and see if we can make it work," I smiled, finally putting my suitcase down.

"That great! See, I told you he would come back to you!," Niall smiled too.

"Yes, yes," I said, blushing a bit, "Oh, um, would you like to drink anything?"

"Water sounds nice," Niall said.

I grabbed a bottle from the fridge, just as I heard footsteps on the stairs again.

"Em, who are you- OH MY GOD," Lily said.

"Uh, Niall this is my roommate Lily, Lily this is Niall Horan, he's staying in our guest room overnight," I said.

Lily just stood there, her mouth open.

"Lily?," I asked.

"How on earth do you two know each other!!!???"

"That's a long story that I forgot to mention to you," I said, fishing out the thing Niall signed for me at the airport quite a while ago.

"Niall met me at the airport here in New York, when I went chasing after Harry and well we've been bumping into each other ever since," I said.

"Holy crapppppp! Can I hug you??," Lily asked.

"Bring it in," Niall smiled.

"Hey guys, I heard yelling down here and way to many voices," Louis said, walking down the stairs.

"We have a small guest that's all,"  I said.

"Louis!?," Niall said.

"Niall!?," Louis said.

"Wait you two know each other too!?," Lily asked.

" 'Course we do! We went to the same school together!," Louis smiled.

"Nice to see you bro, how's everything?," Niall asked as they hugged each other.

"Good, good. Dads making me work extra hard and now I'll be working in the Styles Company with these two," Louis said, pointing to us.

" mean the guy you were chasing after was Harry Styles?," Niall asked me.

"Yes...," I said.

"Why didn't you tell me!! I haven't talked to him in ages! We grew up together!," Niall said.

I face-palmed myself.

"It's a small world," Lily laughed.

"Indeed. Guys I have college tomorrow and a business to run, can we talk more tomorrow?," I asked.

"College? You have college?," Lily asked.

"Duh, it's September the first," I said.

"Uh, duh, no it's not it's the twenty fifth of August, you fool," she said.

"What!?," I asked, looking at my phone and at the date.

Lily laughed.

"Good grief....I told everyone that college begins this week," I mumbled.

"Yeah, that's what Harry said when he called me. That I have to take over for a while cause college is starting for you two," Louis said.

"My bad," I sighed, "But still I have a company to run tomorrow, so everyone upstairs, okay?"

Everyone nodded.

"Niall I'll take you to the guest room," I said, leading the way.

Lily and Louis made their way to her room.

"Thanks again for letting me stay. I know you weren't expecting company," he said, sitting down on the bed.

"It's okay Niall. You're always welcome here. I'm pretty sure no fans will find you in our humble little apartment," I laughed.

"You got that right," he chuckled.

"Let me get you a towel," I said, walking out and to my room, finding a spare white towel.

"Is this your room?," Niall asked, suddenly behind me making me jump.

"Yes, it is," I smiled.

"Sorry if I scared ya," he apologized.

"It's okay really," I said.

He looked around and walked back to his room.

"So here's a towel and I'm pretty sure you have something to sleep in, in your bag. But if you need anything, well you know where my room is," I smiled.

"Thank you Emma," he said, walking to me and giving me a hug.

"It's really nothing Niall. I'm positive you'd be ten times more comfortable in  a five-star hotel...but yeah," I said, looking down at his shoes, as we pulled away.

"But I wouldn't have such a great company if I were to stay there," Niall said, lifting my chin.
I smiled, and his blue eyes sparkled.

"Well, goodnight Emma," he smiled, hugging me again.

"Night," I said. He let me go and I walked out.

I closed the door behind me and smiled. I was thankful that Niall was my friend, because he's a kind of friend that everyone needs.

I was in the kitchen the next morning, making myself some coffee for the road to the company, when Niall walked down the stairs yawning.

"Why are you up so early?," he asked.

I turned around to find him leaning against the counter, his hair all messed up, wearing only a white tank-top.

"Well I have a company to run Mr. Horan," I said.

"At six-thirty in the morning?," he asked, trying to fix his hair, but failed, making it look even messier.

"Its a half an hour drive, and I must be in at seven thirty at least," I said.

"This is why I chose to make money with my voice," he laughed.

"Right," I said.

"What? You do what you love and you get money for it," he said.

"Well, I can't sing so there," I said, pouring the coffee into my thermos.

"Oh really?," Niall asked, lifting an eyebrow.

"Really. LILY!," I yelled up the stairs.

"I'd like to listen to this voice of yours," Niall continued.

"No you would not want to," I said.

"I don't think it's that bad," Niall said.

"It's worse then sleeping on the ceiling," I said, just as Lily rushed downstairs.

"Heya, I'm ready to go," she said.

"Is Louis not coming?," I asked.

"No, he'll come in later," she said.

I nodded.

"Help yourself to anything in the fridge. Or any edible food that you find," I said to Niall.

"Thank you, but I think I'll go back to bed," he said, yawning.

I laughed and shook my head, grabbing my car keys.

Lily's and my ride to the company was pretty silent, mainly just listening to music. We rarely talked in the mornings, cause who wants to talk about stuff a six forty in the morning?

We got to the company pretty smoothly, with no traffic or anything, Sam greeting us by the door, and walking into the silent elevator.

"Do you have anything specific for me to do?," Lily asked, yawning still.

"Um, I need to refresh my mind and check the schedule to see if there are any meetings...but I don't think I need anything specific," I said.

"Except for Harry," she said, just as we stopped at her floor.

"Oh hush you," I said.

She laughed and winked, just as the elevator door closed and took me to the last level, my level.

"Good morning Emma," Sophie said, smiling, giving me my mail, that came in when I was gone.

"Good morning, how's everything?," I asked, scanning through the mail.

"Good, good. For now," she said.

I looked at her, and she crooked a small smile.

"Harry will be back in less then two weeks," I said.

She looked down at her hands.

"But I can assure you, he won't touch you ever again," I said.

"I know, but I just can't.... With him being here, it'll remind me every single day. I can't even bare to talk to him," she said.

"So what is your idea?," I asked, leaning against her desk.

"I don't know really. Maybe move me down to Lily's office?," she said, fumbling with her hands.

"That's actually not a bad idea," I said, thinking it over.

Sophie bit her lip.

"But I need to talk to Har..., Mr. Styles, about this," I said.

She nodded.

I turned to walk to my office.

"Emma?," Sophie said.

I turned around.

She didn't look me in the eyes and I knew she was nervous.

"Are you....are you and Mr. Styles.....something?," she asked, finally getting it out, and looking at me.

This time I looked down.

"It's....complicated....I.......yes," I sighed, not looking at her.

"How? Why?," Sophie asked, almost pleading me to tell her this is a lie.

"It's a long story. What happened to you is because he got mad at me, it's all because of me Sophie," I sighed again.

"Can you tell me more about it?," she asked.

"Come into my office," I said, and walked into it, Sophie following.

She straightened her suit and sat down on the chair, across from mine.

I took a deep breath and spilled out the whole Harry and me story.

Sophie looked at her folded hands in her lap, and gulped.

" love him don't you?," she asked.

"Love? I don't even know how to feel a feeling," I said.

Sophie looked at me confused.

"All I know is that when I'm with him....everything is different," I said.

She nodded.

"Are you mad at me?," I asked.

"Why would I be mad at you?," she said.

I shrugged.

"After what he did to might not want me with him," I said.

Sophie sighed deeply.

"I don't mind if you're with him. It's not like he was my boyfriend or anything. What he did was a huge mistake for him, and I know he's truly sorry or that. But still, I can't stand to see him everyday, because it'll take me back to what happened, and I know that I'll just simply be very uncomfortable. Another reason why I want to move to California, is that I want to explore the world more. I've never had the opportunity to go see Cali, and now I do. I've always dreamed of living there," she said.

"I understand completely," I said.

She smiled.

"Well, Miss Sophie, since there are no hard feelings between us, we might as well go back to our work and I'll make sure that once Harry gets back, you'll be moved downstairs to Lily," I said.

"Thank you Em," she said.

"Not a problem," I said.

She got up and walked out.

I turned my computer on. Time to work.

* 2 hours later *

My phone rang, just when I was scheduling a meeting with one of our investors, by email.

"Hello?," I asked, not checking the caller ID, and bringing my hands back to the keyboard.

"Heya Emma! I was wondering if I could steal you out for lunch," Niall said, from the other end.

"Lunch?," I asked, looking at the time, 9:30 am.

"Yes lunch," he said.

"How about eleven-ish?," I asked.

"Sounds good to me," he said.

"Excellent. But won't you get attacked by fans if you go out in public?," I asked.

"I'll try not to be noticed, don't worry," he said.

"Okay, where are you planning on going?"

"I found this nice cafe on Google about five minutes from the company," he said.

I laughed, shaking my head.

"You really didn't have to," I said.

"You didn't have to waste your time to find a cafe, to take me out to lunch," I said.

"Nonsense! That's what friends are for and anyways, I have nothing better to do, plus I owe you one for letting me stay at you flat," he said.

"Stop being such a nice friend," I said.

"Fine. I won't take you out then," he said.

I laughed, and eventually he joined in.

"Okay, now I really need to get back to work Niall. See you soon," I said.

"Mhmm. Bye," he said, and hung up.

I went back to writing the email, when my desk phone rang.

"Urg, one phone call after another,"  I muttered, picking it up, "Hello?"

"Miss Warren, a young lady is here to see you. Shall I send her up?," Sam asked.

"Uh, sure...," I said.

He hung up.

I quickly re-checked my schedule to see if I somehow didn't forget that I had a meeting today, but no, not until one-thirty today.

Soon Sophie stuck her head into my office.

"Someone's here to see you. Miss Jessica's her name," she said.

"Let her in," I said, getting up.

A tall brunette walked in and immediately I knew who she was. Harrys ex. The girl I talked with. The unpleasant one.

"Hello, how can I help you?," I asked, smiling.

"I don't need any help from you. Tell me how long did you think it'll take for me to realize that you planned up that whole meeting thing, just to lie about Harry cheating on me," she asked.

"Excuse me? I never lied about anything," I said.

" just wanted Harry for yourself now didn't you, you bitch," she said.

"Jessica it's not what it looks like," I said, trying to calm her down.

"Not what it looks like!? Not what it looks like!? Listen here, when Harry comes back you're not allowed to see him anymore," she said.

"Like that's an option, especially that I'm the manager here," I said.

"Get another job," she said.

"Not happening," I said.

She walked up behind my desk and towered over me. Let me tell you I felt like a dwarf. Not only was she tall but she had these high-high heels on.

"You are to stay away from Harry," she said, poking me in the chest.

I moved her hand away.

"You call Harry and let him EXPLAIN," I said.

"About what?," she asked, crossing her hands.

"About what happened, what he sees you as, and about him and me," I said.

"What does he see me as?"

"As someone he only used to get his mind off of his business," I said simply.

Jessica slapped my face.

"I was his one and only until you came into his life you bitch," she said, then grabbed my glass of water and threw it at me. Luckily I caught the glass, but yeah, I was soaking wet, cause that glass was FULL.

Jessica walked out and slammed the door.

I walked out after a while, to find a mouth-open, starring, Sophie.

"Hi," I said, fake smiling.

"What did she do to you?," Sophie asked, grabbing some paper towel.

"Um, slapped me in the face and spilled my full glass of water on me," I said.

Sophie shook her head.

"That was one of Harry's ex's by the way," I told her.

"She's waaaayyy too tall," Sophie laughed.

"Tell me about it. She was probably a giant to Harry," I said.

Sophie tried to wring the water out of my suit and shirt, but it was pretty useless.

"What time is it?," I asked.

"A little after ten," she said.

I took my phone out and called Niall, hoping he was still home.

"Niall?," I asked, when I heard someone pick up the phone.

"Oh hi Emma, give me a second to find Nialler," Louis said.

I shook my head, finding it a bit weird that there was actually two guys in our apartment.

"Heya Em, I was about to leave," Niall said.

"It's a miracle that you're still at home," I said.

"Whats the matter?," Niall asked.

"Stuff happened and I'm soaking wet, could you maybe grab me one of my other suits from my closet," I said.

"Soaking wet?," Niall asked.

"Yeah, I'll tell you more once we're at lunch," I said.

"Okay, I'm in your closet. Which one the blue one, the light blue one, the navy one, or the grey one, or the darker red one?," he asked.

"The grey one please," I said.

"Okay...," he said.

"Now there's a dresser in the closet, do you see it?," I asked.

"Open the top left drawer and take out one white tank-top," I said.

"Gotcha," Niall said, under his breath, "Do you need any undergarments?"

"No, I think mine are still fine," I said.

"Good cause I don't want to be driving around with panties hanging out of my pocket. Don't want people getting that image," he laughed.

"Oh gosh Ni," I said, then bit my tongue.

"Knee?," he joked.

"Sorry," I said.

"It's okay Emma. I call you Em, you're allowed to give me a nickname too," he said.

I smiled.

"Okay, is that really everything?," he asked.

"Yes, thank you," I said.

"It's NOT a problem," he said.

"See you in a bit," I said.

"See ya," he said and hung up.

"Well, I ordered a fresh new suit," I told Sophie.

She laughed a little.

"Who's Niall?," she asked.

"Do you know Niall Horan?," I asked.

"Oh my gosh, yes," she said.

"Well he's my friend," I said.

"No. And he's coming here!?," she asked.

"That would be a yes," I said.

Sophie quickly walked over to the big mirror in the hallway.

"Uuu, someone has a crush on Niall Horan, now don't they?," I asked.

Sophie bit her lip.

"I'll make sure to mention you at our lunch," I said.

"Do you think....he might like me? Is he single?," she asked.

"Yes, I think he is. And I'm sure he'll like you," I said.

Sophie turned back to the mirror, fixing her hair.

I grinned and walked back into my office, finding a towel to clean up the water mess on the floor.
