The Horror You Inspire

The days changed like you wouldn't believe.
When he was here, the grass was green, the flowers were pink, & the night was so bright.
Life had sunshine & smiles, and all those things us pessimist's despise.
Home wasn't like it used to be, because a house was never home, & he was never really planted like the flowers that lead up to their house.
He was home, and anywhere they went, as long as they were together, they were home.
There is, in fact, no place like it.
After he died, everything suddenly lost taste, like he had taken it with him.
So, she had to become friendly with the darkness and all sorts of scum, like the sewer rats & the Venus fly traps that she thought sometimes talked to her.
She had become comfortably numb.
All the animals spoke highly of him, and they only really fear the Seventh Son, his offspring.
It wasn't quite prophecy, but his rage & evil were predicted not long ago; regardless, she ignored it for as long as she could, because ignorance is bliss, right?

17. Chapter 16

The next week flies by, Maybelyn balancing customers with making time to make the spell with Hilkiah, and avoiding Keturah and Mitchell like the plague.

"What's heaven like?" Maybelyn asks Hilkiah, in attempt to make small talk as they usually do.

"It's.. interesting. Some of you humans have theories about it, which some are correct, but others are just nuts" Hilkiah replies with a small laugh.

"Like what?" Maybelyn asks, clearly intrigued.

"Why don't you give me a few ideas you hear often" Hilkiah suggests.

"Hmm... Well all you angels are up there watching us humans on the big screen as we screw up" Maybelyn offers.

A moment of silence, and Hilkiah replies with a guilty face "well that's correct."

Maybelyn stops what she's doing because she's so aghast at that truth.

"You all float around on clouds, playing harps and you have halos" Maybelyn says.

"No floating on clouds, we can fly though. Some of us play the harp, but more as a pass time than a chore, and no, we don't have halos" Hilkiah replies.

"Some people say there are no animals in heaven, and everyone is an adult" Maybelyn suggests.

"Your heaven is what you want it to be, so if you like animals, they will be there, and if you don't, there won't. All ages are in heaven because all ages die. What humans don't think about is when children and babies die down here, they think God is a bad God for letting that happen, but really, he just wants more laughter and crayon on the walls in heaven, and it's not like you'll never see them again, when you die and if you go to heaven, you'll see them again, so there's nothing to worry about" Hilkiah elaborates.

"Your heaven is what you want it to be, do you mean we get our own separate heavens?" Maybelyn asks, and knows that Tom will be in hers.

"Yes. For example, Ed and his whole family are in their heaven, because each of them find joy in each other, and families hardly are spilt up. The youngest one, Rosie, has puppies, candy and blankets all over her heaven, because those are her favourite things, and the whole family is doing well by the way, they don't remember how they died, and there are no scars in heaven, so don't worry about them" Hilkiah reassures, and it makes Maybelyn feel so much better.

"Hate to cut this conversation short, but all we need is your blood" Hilkiah adds.

"Okay, here" Maybelyn says and sticks her arm out.

Hilkiah uses a knife to cut Maybelyn and measure her blood into the last jar, and then close it.

"So tonight you will come when you feel the time is right, and all you have to do is put the water and the fire on the rest of the ingredients and then?" Maybelyn asks.

"Then she will be weak enough to kill" Hilkiah replies.

"How though?" Maybelyn asks.

"Leave that to me" Hilkiah answers and snaps all the ingredients away, and then leaves a second later without another word.

"Cryptic little bastard" Maybelyn mutters.

"Watching and listening from the big screen in heaven, Maybel, I heard that" Hilkiah comes back just to say and it gives Maybelyn a good laugh, which is something she definitely hasn't had in awhile.

Hours anxiously waiting pass before Keturah returns with Mitchell and Maybelyn only waits for Hilkiah to appear when he thinks the time is right.

"You never sit with us, what is the occasion?" Keturah asks skeptically as Maybelyn joins them in the kitchen.

"Mouse in my room" she replies.
"You love small animals" Mitchell states, assuming he pays attention to his mother's likes and dislikes.

"I do not like mice in the same room that I sleep in, but yes, I do like small animals, however will not tolerate them into my room, and am just going to wait out here till it disappears" Maybelyn says, wondering if they're picking up what she's saying.

"How many customers did I miss today?" Mitchell asks, and Maybelyn just wants Hilkiah to her here so this can all be over with.

"Only two" Maybelyn says.

"Rough. Business isn't booming, huh, May?" Keturah taunts.

"There's this demon that hangs around, and she is probably scaring the customers off" Maybelyn retorts, and Keturah jumps to her feet.

Before Keturah can do anything, Hilkiah assumes the time to do what he was sent to do, and appears before Keturah, shouting an incantation and a fire erupts beneath her feet, and she starts to scream.

Mitchell tries to attack Hilkiah, but because he in an angel and Mitchell is so evil, the forces defy each other and Mitchell can't touch Hilkiah to defend Keturah.

Maybelyn stands back, but still pays attention closely to the incantation the angel shouts, and watches as the demon withers away to nothing.

After Hilkiah recites the full incantation, Keturah finishes burning and the spirit in her diminishes until both her spirit and body are completely demolished into ash and thin air and the impact is so large, Maybelyn and Mitchell are both knocked back, and Mitchell goes unconscious after hitting his head on a bookshelf.

Maybelyn gets up from the floor and realises she is free from the worst demon she has ever encountered, and has the courage of a lion knowing that she has an angel on her side if Mitchell tries to attack her...

That is, until Hilkiah falls over.

Maybelyn rushes over to Hilkiah's side and scans him to see what is wrong while trying to get him to respond.

"Hilkiah, what's wrong?" Maybelyn begs.

"The spell needs a piece of an angel's divine light, which, really, is most of my being" Hilkiah replies.

"Speak english" Maybelyn says.

"The spell needed  a big part of me to work" Hilkiah says and laughs while coughing.

"Godammit Hilkiah. You couldn't tell me that before?!" Maybelyn demands.

"And what would you have done? Find a new angel? Or not done it at all?" Hilkiah questions, and Maybelyn can't reply because she knows he's right.

"Well I'm sorry... And I appreciate so much you giving up your divinity" Maybelyn sighs.

"You're worth it, Maybelyn Carson. You put up with your demon offspring and you have to suffer with the death of your husband and have had to put up with the most wretched demon for the last 4 months, I think you deserve a break" Hilkiah explains, and at that point Maybelyn is bawling.

"You're too kind, I will always remember you" Maybelyn cries as Hilkiah breathes his last in her lap and dissolves into air, much different to Keturah, and the last thing she hears is floorboards creaking before she feels a sharp pain in her head and gets knocked unconscious.
