10. Chapter 10

~~Sitting around a fire like this, makes me think of the times I did it with my family or friends.
Where the world wasn’t so fucked up, as it is now.
Jack let me do the plugging and cleaning of the chicken, while Lucia and he went out to see if they could find anything to cook it with, to our surprise they actually did. Vegetables still grow even though it's the apocalypse, at first I wasn’t sure we even should eat any of this, but the others told me that, it was checked long before I woke up. If you could still use the earth as recourses for food.
The only animals we shouldn’t touch, animals like cows and pigs. They were one of the few animals that have been put so many chemicals and such over the years that their immune system couldn’t handle the apocalypse and made us unable to eat them.
But here we are, after eating can food for days, eating a, well wouldn't call it a good soup, but a soup nonetheless. They found carrots and potatoes, so at least I will actually get something down my stomach that may actually feel like it ended in my stomach before vanishing.
Lucia sits beside me, cleaning her gun, in the light from the fire.
William gets some rest while I try to play chief, and make us something that edible.
But I never really was good at the cooking part, so I hope they don’t expect something fancy, we don’t even have something to give it flavor with. Jack sits beside me following my every move like he is afraid I will put something poisoning in it. I must admit, I have never been able to actually catch one of those assholes, they always run away before I even get the chance to think of trying, how did you do it?” his eyes following me putting the sliced potatoes in the pot I found at the house. I sit down beside him looking into the fire, my grandparents have a farm, or probably more like had now. I used to go there every summer with my little brother, and they were self-providing, so stuff like slaughtering chickens isn't a big deal for me. And I have learned how to get close enough to actually catch one” I giggle, thinking back on how it took me weeks before I caught my first chicken, and how proud I showed it to my granddad.
I was born in a big city, so never had to actually work with animals” he says looking up at the stars, I glance at him out of the corner of my eye, and for the first time, see Jack feeling somehow… relaxed. And actually talking to me like a normal human being, it's kind of freaky, but also nice for a chance, after all the fights we have had.
I didn't know you actually are able to talk to me without telling me how stupid I am” smiling at him, he looks at me and burst out laughing.
,, pumpkin, I may be an asshole, but I don’t treat people badly, I treat them accordingly” he takes the pot out of the fire “ it's not my fault, you have been a pain in all our asses since I found you” he hiss loudly, when he accidentally touch the pot, I quickly take my water bottle and pour something over his hand ,, sometimes I really do think you care, other times I am just waiting for you to shoot me while I sleep” I mumble under my breath, putting a cloth over his hand.
I walk over to wake William, while Jack sits there cursing the pot, I softly shake him, and he sits up drowsy. I am awake” he yawned stretching, I take the folding grill that’s hanging on his bag and put the pot on it above the fire, so it keeps warm.
I found all our cups, in stainless steel and start to pour up while Jack and William find their fold cutlery and hand out, I get the spoon and I start to eat. the feeling of actual meat and vegetables sliding down your throat after have eaten can food for days, it's indescribable.
After eating so much my stomach feeling like it's about to burst, we pour the rest down the boy’s thermo cups. Lucia kills the fire, and Jack lit up his hurricane lamp.
tired I jump into Jacks embrace so used to it now, I don’t even give it a second thought.
He, as usual, pull me in so I lay my head in the crook of his neck, and have an arm around me protectively while the other lay on his gun. Carefully I check if the knife is still in the sheath on my arm, have learned that you can't sleep without having one eye open.
I sigh relieved when I feel it, it has become like a second skin, and a true friend the last couple of days. it has saved me more times than I can count.
I look at Jack searching his tactical hamburger chest bag, across his chest for the thermal can, while we walk through a field of corn. Sometimes I can't understand how both boys can handle being packet like donkeys like that, I know that there are things we need in every holster, pocket bag they carry. But I'm getting tired of having a bag, tactical leg pocket holster for my gun.
And the waist bag drop thigh pouch William gave me. I am myself covered in hidden weapons we have found through the cities, but I'm nothing compared to these two.
I carry around four knives, all have been of good use, the one in my right booth, maybe not so much, but the one on hidden in a holster on my lower back always seem to surprise them because they only see the knife across my chest and on my arm.
I look up at the burning sun, wiping the sweat off my forehead, and tighten the knot on my hood around my waist, it's days like these I really miss simple things like showers and deodorant.
Lucia walks in front of me, wiping sweat away from her chest, her brown hair almost becomes light, died from being outside so much. I can't be the only one missing the days where you could sit by a pool, with a cold beer” I hear her hiss pushing corn out of her way.
Sometimes I forget that they are a lot older than me, Lucia is the closest age with me, with her twenty years. She was only seventeen when this started, two years older than me when I went into a coma. “Hey hot stuff; give me a boost so I can see how far we are” Lucia walks towards Jack that crouch down to give her a horse shoe.
He lifts her up, and she rests with a knee on his shoulder looking around, he asks her what she sees before she jumps down. Frustrated she pulls a corn stick up and throws it.
Letting them bicker about what way to go because Lucia saw no end So, decide to join William that just keep walking east. I look at him, and can't help but wonder how they came to be after I found out about William, Jack told me a lot of stuff about them, and I have the last couple of days burned with questions. And we don’t really have much else to do anyway.
I know I'm maybe too curious here, but how was it? your first kiss?” he turns towards me and look at me with confusion “ I mean, it must have been hard being in the military when you're gay”
what in the world are you talking about” he looks at me with confusion, and I can't help but get confused myself, shouldn’t I have mentioned it? did I overstep a line? I start to wish I could dig myself a hole and die there.
well… Jack said you two are engaged, so wanted to know how it happened” William head shut towards Jack that walks behind us with a smirk, what? was I not supposed to tell her?” Jack burst out laughing, I look at Lucia for an explanation, because she has been with them longer than I have, but she looks just as confused as me.
Sage, don’t listen to anything coming from that mouth, we are not engaged” William growl at Jack. Jack stops laughing and get a hurtful expression and whimper. What? I'm sorry sweetheart! I didn't know it was supposed to be a secret!” he moves towards William and kiss him on the cheek, William brush him off. Jack, sometimes you go too far with pranking people” he mumbles, but I'm not the only one seeing the smile lurking in curve of his mouth.
