The Ridgalite

Eddie Saint owns the Roaring venture a trawler moored at the fish quay- his crew work hard and play hard - one of them is Ron Lee a young lad who has aspirations of becoming a rock star. He was in the Royal Navy on board the HMS Illustrious as a trained chef before joining the trawler boat. The lads all tell him that his songs are crap because they don't wan't to lose a good cook. The story also tells of two rival shop keepers- Ronnie Hancock and Billy Burston have been each others throats for years- read the comic antics of both men. "The Ridgalite is an insite of life in the early sixties on an an estate with high unemployment and little hope - where every day is a constant struggle. There are some though who prove that if you have hope then dreams can come true.

No thanks’ but you go a head I bet that you haven’t eaten since you got back. ‘

“Actually you are right. I was about to make my tea when Basek called.’

“I am just going to open a tin of Heinz vegetable soup if you would like to share a cup with me.’

“Go on then but just a little.’

Dougie opened the soup and then lit the gas he poured the soup into the pan then placed it over the gas ring. He cut two slices of bread and spread some salted butter from Burston’s on them. He waited until the soup was hot enough then poured it into two mugs then added some pepper. Placing the soup on a tray and buttered bread on a plate he brought them into the kitchen and sat next to Paula. She picked up the mug and used a spoon to eat it with Dougie dunked his bread into the cup and then blew on it because it was hot.’

Paula picked up half a slice of bread then dipped it into her cup

The soup was warming and tasted nice too. When they were finished Paula asked him if they were going to bed. Dougie took the cups and plate away then washed up before coming back again. He placed the fire guard over the fire, turned out the light then took Paula by the hand to his bedroom. She removed her clothes and stood in her underwear before slipping under the covers. Dougie watched her as she undressed and she was beautiful he thought. “Can I just hold you said Paula?

“Yes said Dougie who didn’t want to make love to Paula on this night of all nights.

He wanted it to be special.’

He left his underwear on and got in beside her kissed her softly then turned so she could wrap her arm around him then he turned out the light by his bedside.

The light came through the gap in the curtains in the morning, Dougie looked at the clock it was six o’clock. Paula was still sleeping as he slipped quietly out of the room and closed the door behind him. He found a clean pair of underpants and went to the outside toilet to relive himself before putting on his clean underwear and then his jeans.

He put the kettle on and made a pot of tea Paula got up soon after and she asked him where the toilet was.’

It’s outside I’m afraid.’

“Oh I better put some clothes on then.

“I would or you will give Mr Glass a heart attack if he sees you in your bra and knickers.’

“There was the hint of a smile on Paula’s face as she went into her room and then got ready.

What am I to do I haven’t brought any clothes with me to change into.’

“Don’t worry we can go into town and buy some.’

“I haven’t got any money with me Doug what am I going to do?

Doug went to her and held her in his arms. “Listen I have plenty money; I have to go to the bank today to get the wages for the crew then drop it off at Basek’s house.

He had bought some pay packets that had a gum label at the top so he placed five into his coat pocket. When they had eaten some toast and drank a cup of tea they set off after a quick wash.’

Dougie gave her a hundred pounds and told her to get what she needed.

I won’t need all that she said. Take it anyway just in case.

“I’m going to the bank I won’t be long.’
