The Ridgalite

The Rigalite focuses on the People who lived in Marina Avenue in the Ridges Estate in North Shields. Eddie Saint owns the Roaring venture a trawler moored at the fish quay- his crew work hard and play hard - one of them is Ron Lee a young lad who has aspirations of becoming a rock star. He was in the Royal Navy on board the HMS Illustrious as a trained chef before joining the trawler boat. The lads all tell him that his songs are crap because they don't wan't to lose a good cook. The story also tells of two rival shop keepers- Ronnie Hancock and Billy Burston have been each others throats for years- read the comic antics of both men. "The Ridgalite is an insite of life in the early sixties on an an estate with high unemployment and little hope - where every day is a constant struggle. There are some though who prove that if you have hope then dreams can come true.

supplies the next day. He gave her five hundred dollars and she told him it wouldn’t cost half of that. I will come for you tomorrow if you like and we can go into town.’

“I’d rather not Sally if you don’t mind the least people know that I’m here the better. I would change you’re outfit if I were you then you stand out like a fly on a horses butt.’ I will buy you some clothes that will help you fit right in.’

“What size boots are you?

“Size twelve,

“Big feet haven’t you; what waist size are you?’

“I’m a twenty eight and I have a forty six inch chest.’

“Sally raised her eyebrows; you’re about six two aren’t you.’

Yes how did you guess?’

“Well I’m five feet ten and you are four inches taller than me.’

“You are very tall for a woman.’

“Yes I must take after daddy.’ “Vance is very tall for his age too.’

“You wouldn’t think that he was just sixteen.’

“Is your boyfriend very tall then?’

“I don’t have a boyfriend.’

“Really I find that hard to believe; you being such a bonny lass as well.’

“I love your accent by the way; the Scottish people have a strange type of accent.’

“Scottish, we are not from Scotland we are known as Geordies because were born near the River Tyne. Scotland is some 150 miles away from where we live.

I’m sorry I thought…

“Its alright many people have made that mistake since I came here.’

“Well I must go Ronnie or we will still be talking this time tomorrow night.’

“I wouldn’t mind said Ron; you are good company.

“Yes you a good to be around too, I will see you tomorrow then’

Sally got into her pick up truck and drove away.’

Ron went inside the cabin that was twice the size of his house back home. It was tastefully decorated and had a log fire; a kitchen stove and a generator that heated the water. The bed was made from oak timber and was surprisingly comfortable. He unpacked his case stripped naked then sat on the bed until the early hours with a pencil and paper but nothing other than Sally came to mind. He liked her and hoped that she liked him.’

He eventually closed his eyes and fell into a deep restful sleep. He was still in bed the next morning when there was a knock at the door. Ron grabbed a bath towel and covered himself then went to the door.

It was sally carrying two bags of shopping he reached out to help her and the towel he had wrapped around himself came away and he stood naked before her.

“Sorry he said as he picked up the towel then scurried into the bedroom to put on his jeans.

He came back out as sally was putting away the shopping she had bought for him.’

“You’re not an early riser I take it said Sally laughing.’

“Actually I am but with all of this touring over the last six months I haven’t had a good night sleep. Living out of a suitcase is not recommended I can tell you that.’

I put on the pot for coffee is that okay?’

“Fine; I’m actually getting converted.’ At home I always drank tea but since coming here I’ve drank nothing else but coffee.’

“I will cook you some ham and eggs if you want to wash up.’

“That would be nice thanks.’
