Me vs. Society

14 year old Phoenix Smith has just moved into small-town Marion, Alaska. New place means New school, she now attends Westward Jr. High. Not everybody there is the nicest except for a few girls and one guy. Life seems to be the worst when all of a sudden a group of injured dogs are abandoned on the side of the road. Phoenix's love for dogs is just too overwhelming...

1. Not today.

We pull into the school's parking lot. I get out of the car and tell my mom I love her. I take my navy blue backpack with me, I close the door and head toward my new High School. When I walk inside the long halls are empty, not a soul to be seen. I stand at the entrance for a while debating which way to go in my head. I see a sign hanging from the ceiling saying, "Office" with a little arrow pointing toward a wooden door. I quickly pace to the door and open it, a few older ladies sat behind desks and counters. They were all bickering about what part of some magazine was true or not. I said excuse me very softly and nobody noticed me, so I spoke a little louder. "No need to yell in here young lady!" One of the ladies snapped at me. "Oh, I'm very sorry..."

"Oh! I was just messin' with ya!" Thank God, there was no way I was getting in trouble my first day. She stuck her hand out and I shook it. "I'm Ms. Alexander, what's your name?"

"I-I'm Phoenix."

"Well, it's a pleasure to meet you Phoenix." She had a soft southern accent and she smiled ear to ear. My blonde bangs hanging over my forehead poked my eyes, so I blew them away.
