While The World is Going Crazy

He had gotten weird fanmail before but these were serious threats...

4. Chapter Four

She'd been through messy break ups before, really messy week long crying, distraught break ups, but they'd never landed her in a police interview room before. Wrapping her hands around the plastic cup of coffee in front of her she forced herself to stay calm. She had nothing to feel guilty for, nothing to be afraid of, but the bleak, white washed room was clearly designed to bring out fear and terror in even the most innocent of its occupants.

"I'd just like to reiterate that you're not under arrest, you're free to leave at any time and at the moment you're just helping us with our enquiry." the casually dressed police woman in front of her smiled formally at her.

Toni nodded and swallowed hard.

"Can you tell us about your relationship with Mikey ?"

Toni froze, she'd spent weeks trying to forget about Mikey , the trips round the world, the romantic dinners, the quiet nights in, she'd forced herself to shut it all out so she could hold her life together, but here she was being asked to talk it all over with two complete strangers and a tape recorder.

She coughed to clear the lump in her throat, "We were together for three years… just over three years." she swallowed hard again, "We split up three weeks ago and haven't spoken since."

"And how did your relationship come to an end?"

"Badly!" Toni sighed, perhaps a little too honestly for her own good, "It's hard being with someone you hardly ever see, having a relationship around some record companies schedule. We were arguing more and more and it all came to a head and we finished it."

"Who finished it?"

"We both did."

"What reason did you have to be at the hotel where he's staying this morning?" the policewoman barely looked up as she scribbled away in her notepad.

"I was meeting a friend for lunch." Toni bit her lip nervously, "Gary Barlow 's wife Mikey wasn't supposed to know, I didn't really want to see him. I couldn't really face it…"

Toni stopped herself, why was she telling them this. It wasn't a whinge about men over lunch with her girlfriends. There was an awkward silence in the room as the policewoman gave Toni a moment to compose herself.

A silence broken by a knock on the door, "Can I have a word?" a man, that Toni assumed to be another policeman poked his head round the door and waved the two policewomen outside.

As they left the room and shut the door behind them, Toni glanced round the room, suddenly aware of the CCTV cameras in each corner of the room all pointing at her. She suddenly felt like she were in some awful horror movie where they get the wrong person and the nightmare of the victim goes on. Her head was a mess, she was scared for herself, scared for Mikey , scared for his family, and confused about how she'd ended up here.

She pulled herself back together as the door opened and the policewoman who had been interviewing her came back into the room alone. Was this the scene where she played good cop and tried to weed a confession out ofToni by pretending to be her friend?

"We've got some new information Miss . You're free to go, thank you for helping us with our enquiry."

Toni 's mouth fell open in shock, "What's happened?"

"I'm afraid I can't tell you." the policewoman shook her head, "I'll show you out. Can I call you a taxi?"

Toni shook her head and followed the woman from the room. This really was one of the strangest experiences of her life, and she'd had a fair few weird experiences with Mikey .
