“That’s fantastic news, I’m so proud of you lads. What time is your train?

They are meeting us a four hundred hours Sir.’

“Right, I can tell you that the train leaves at nine forty five a.m. on platform four. I will meet you there at nine fifteen.

“Thank you Sir.’

“Sergeant Lad not sir.’

Thank you Sergeant.’

“Carry on.’

Roger put down the phone. The sergeant is coming to Newcastle to see us off.’ Isn’t that great?’

“Bloody marvellous replied Ronnie.’

Right then I better go break the news to my mother and father; I will see you for work at the usual time. Four days left in that stinking factory.’

Ronnie said goodbye to Roger’s mother and father before heading over the road carrying the list that Roger had made out for him.

Over the next few days both lads did their runs with gusto and when the time came for them to leave both Roger and Ronnie’s mother were crying. Roger hugged his father before he left for work. He left his car around at Brenda’s and told her to get some driving lessons so she could drive the car down to see him if he got time off. They both said that they didn’t want goodbyes at the station so she rang him on Friday morning before she left for the hairdresser’s.’

Roger told her that he would give her a call later that day. Ronnie came over at eight o’clock he was packed and ready to go.

“Let’s get out of here mate before I change me mind.’

Grabbing their suitcases Roger and Ronnie left Oakwood Avenue in North Shields; they hoped that in thirty two weeks that they would both return as a Green Beret’s in the Royal Marines.

They stowed the cases on the bus to Newcastle then sat up stairs out of the way. They didn’t want to have to explain to people they knew where they were going.

Ronnie was really nervous he chatted away non stop all the way to the town.

They got their tickets and went to Platform Four and looked around there were many people commuting to Durham and the surrounding areas. Some were grabbing a quick cigarette as the train they were about to take pulled slowly in and came to a halt.

The sound of a whistle could be heard as the station master signalled to the driver.
