In January 1988 there had been no snow for three years and the weather had been very mild. This summer was being talked about as the hottest on record. Roger was nearly finished doing his A’levels. He couldn’t wait until he was eighteen so he could join up. He was now driving his own car. He had got hold of a Renault Fuego in very good nick for two hundred and fifty pounds. It was taxed an insured for another six months.

It was red in colour and when he went to pick Brenda up from work she got the shock of her life. Ann was running around it to have a look as well then jumped into the back seat for a lift.

Brenda slid into the passenger seat at the front. “It’s practically brand new Roger.’

“It belonged to an old lady who hardly ever drove; apparently there was only eight thousand miles on the clock and the tyres are perfect.’

“I wish Ronnie would get himself a car.’

“Well, Sergeant Connolly taught me so tell him to ask him.’

“He needs a right kick up the pants doesn’t he Brenda.’

“Roger put the car in gear then checked his mirror he signalled to pull out then drove away. Roger was a very good driver and followed the speed limits as the drove towards Hillheads Road then on towards the ice rink. “Are we going out tonight said Ann?

“I don’t know said Roger; I was hoping to take Brenda for a drive tonight somewhere then go for a meal.’

“That sounds nice.’

“Well actually I’ve booked a table for Brenda and I at a restaurant in Hexham tonight.’

“Oh I see; so where’s Ronnie going?’

“I don’t know Ann; has he not arranged to meet you.’

“He said he was going out with you.’

“It’s news to me Ann, honestly.’

“That’s okay; no doubt he’ll ring me tonight.’

“You are welcome to join us if you like Ann.’

“Thanks’ but three’s a crowd.’ “You take Brenda out and enjoy yourselves.’

They reached Billy Mill Roundabout then went down towards Landsdown Terrace.

Turning right after the football ground which would take them to the Quadrant; Roger stopped outside of Brenda’s house.
