Michael flew into a rage and stood up: who’s callin’ me tell me noo and I will gan doon there to their hooses and knock their bloody heeds off.’

“Well yer cannot blame folk yer haven’t done a days work in ten year.’ I think its aboot time yer showed yer son that you’re not the lazy bugger that people make you out to be and get yersel a job.’

“Who’s ganna employ me like Liz: I’m nearly fifty year owld.’

“Well you will never find oot sittin’ in the bloody Robin Hood aal day will yer.’

“Right I will show them swine’s that I’m no lazy sod.’

“The morrow mornin’ I’m lookin’ for work.’

Liz placed the dishes in the sink then ran the tap; she’d heard this story so many times before. She only hoped that this time her husband meant it.

Liz was up and ready when Michael got up he went to the toilet then into the bathroom. It was just after seven o’clock she poured out some corn flakes for Roger then went to get him up.

He woke drowsily then went to the toilet; when he was finished he flushed and went to wash himself in the wash basin.

The green bar of Palm Olive soap was still wet from his father using it as he lathered his hands and face then rinsed them in the water then pulled the plug out.

He walked into the kitchen and sat whilst his mother poured some fresh milk on his corn flakes and he began to eat.

“Now Roger you are going to have to stay at school for dinners now; I will give you some dinner money, give it to Mrs Lawson your teacher then you will be able to join the others in the canteen.’

Right mam will you be in when I come home?

“No come down to the fruit shop and I will give you the key to let yourself in.’

“I have left out your clean clothes get yourself ready and leave here at 8.30 a.m. do you here me? His mother had taught him the time so he knew when to leave.

“I will call on Ronnie then we can go to school together.’

“Watch the roads mind you.’

“I will mam.’

“Right then I’m off see you later.’

She said goodbye to Michael who was putting on a shirt and tie.’

She couldn’t believe it he was actually going to look for work. “Be lucky she said as she kissed him then hurried down the street to start her new job.
