That night Roger was at the TA Barracks when the phone rang and his mother answered.

Brenda asked if Roger was there and his mother told her that he was at the Cadets. Who do I say called?’

“It’s alright thank you said the caller then hung up.’

Brenda put on her coat then ran out to get the bus she got off in Tynemouth Front Street running back to the barracks hoping that she had not missed him.

She looked through the railings and there she saw him he was doing marching drills with rifles; She looked for Ronnie but there was no sign of him.

She checked her watch; it was nearly nine and she wondered what time that it would finish. Then she heard the word dismissed as the Sergeant shouted.

Roger went to hand in his weapon then put on his flak jacket. He stepped outside the gates and Brenda called his name.’

Turning he saw her then led her away from the barracks before she threw her arms around him and they kissed for what seemed an eternity.

Oh Roger I’ve missed you.’

“How did you know I was here?’

“I rang your house; is that okay?’

“I bet my mother got a shock he laughed.’

They kissed again and he smothered her face in little butterfly kisses on her cheeks her nose, and her eyes.’

“I know now Roger; I will wait for you no matter how long it takes because…. She looked up into his eyes and told him that she loved him.’

“That’s good because I love you as well.’

“Thank you for my flowers they are beautiful. I had to explain to my mother who had sent them.’ She is very jealous because my father never sends flowers ever.’

He says that they are a waste of good money because they only last a short while.

He is wrong though because it’s the first time anyone has bought me two dozen red roses or any flowers for that matter; I will never forget it Roger as long as I live.’

They boarded the bus when it came and held hands as they found a seat together.

Roger had his TA Beret on and all the women on the bus were staring at him.’
