The pack that Roger was carrying weighed one hundred and ten pounds; twice the weight of the pack he’d been used to carrying. He met his friend at the gate and the headed towards the bus stop at Burt Avenue at speed marching pace. Both the girls were waiting at the bus stop when they arrived.

Hi, got everything?’

“Yes; everything including the bloody kitchen sink said Ann.’

“The bus is due in five minutes and there’s a bus a ten past seven at the Haymarket that will take us to Keswick.’

“How long will it take to get there Roger asked Brenda.’

“About two hours which means we will be erecting our tent in the dark. I have brought an oil filled lantern and two torches with spare batteries.

“I’ve brought a torch said the girls.’

“I’ve brought lots of food said Ronnie.’

“I guessed you would said Ann.

“One thing is certain then; your pack will be only half full when we come back.’

The bus to Newcastle came down the street and came to a halt Roger and Ronnie paid the girls fares then placed the back packs neatly in the luggage rack.

“Going somewhere nice asked the driver.

“Yes, we are going to climb three peaks in the Lake District.’

“Better you than me; I’m afraid of heights.’

“Well we‘re on our way said Ronnie as Ann cuddled into him.

Roger took out the map from his pocket and opened it out. Right we are here he pointed out and this is where we are going.’

“I hope you remembered your compass Ron?’

“Yes Sir, I have it along with my map.’

“Good lad.’

“How did you wangle getting tomorrow off Ann?’ “We told Marlene that we were needed to help out at a relative wedding and that we were doing all the hairs.’

“She said we should have brought the business to the shop not gone off to do it our selves.’

“I just said that the money that she charged was too steep for the bride, six brides maids, both mothers; the groom, the best man, and both fathers.’
