Adapt and Recover

"Adapt and Recover" which tells about two boys growing up in the 1970's in which was still known as the Ridges Estate. Michael and Lizzy Fox live in Oakwood Avenue they have friends who live across the road; Connie and Bob Harris. Both of their sons Roger and Ronnie play together and go to the same school. Infact they are inseparable. This story takes you through their childhood together and their desire to be Royal Marine Commandos after Lizzy, Rogers mother buys Roger an Action man toy for Christmas. As young boys they join the Army Cadets until they reach the age of eighteen where they sign up to take on the hardest training regime in the world. see the boys grow into men as they are sent to fight in the Gulf War in 1991. This is a story of friendship and comradery. one that will last a lifetime.

The sound of him urinating could be heard from the passage then the chain was pulled two or three times before the toilet flushed. Michael took off his cap and jacket. He had on his navy waist coat with his grandfathers pocket watch and Albert chain inside.

“Is my tea ready?’

“You’ve just walked through the door Michael; where do you think this is the bloody Ritz Hotel or what?’

“Make is a nice cuppa’ tea then love he said as he put his arms around his wife and kissed her on the cheek.’

“Away wi ye Michael Fox; yer stink of beer.’

“Whey av’ only had three bottles of broon ale woman.’

“Aye and the pope’s not Catholic an aal Michael.’

“A have pet honest; a swear on my mother’s grave.’

“Your poor mother should haunt you with all the lies you tell.’

Michael slumped into the chair as Lizzy boiled a whistling kettle full of water and filled up the tea pot with some Rington’s tea bags.’

“Do we have to drink that crap Liz, it’s like drinking gnat’s piss is that?’

“We’ll have less of that language in er’e an aal’ Michael Fox; your supposed to be setting an example for our son to follow not teaching him words from the gutter.’

“Alright I’m sorry; divent gan on at me will yer.’

When the kettle boiled Lizzy filled up the pot and stirred it then got Michaels pint pot from the cupboard.

“Bye the way we got a letter from the council they are re- modernising all the hooses around here starting next summer.’

“Aye an aal like to bet yer that they put up the sodden rents an aal to pay for the bugger.’

“Where’s wor Roger?’

He’s watchin’ the Flintstones on the telly, leave him be.’

“Can he not watch something educational like?’

“He’s been to school aal day Michael, leave the lad alone.’

Lizzy put a pan of chips on then took out the frying pan and placed some lard into it and added six links of sausage from Hoults the butcher.
