feed the muscles and the lactic acid that was replacing the oxygen was making them feel as if they were carrying a ton of coal in each arm. A couple of times the heads of both lads went under momentarily Ronnie spat some water out of his mouth that he had nearly swallowed then resumed, the last minute was absolutely hell both of them were fatigued now and could have quite easily given up but somewhere in the recess of their minds they knew to give up would mean failure and they would only have 24 hours in which to do the whole lot again. When the second hand finally struck the hour mark to signal that they had completed the task they had to then place the weights at the side of the pool without assistance. Both lads’ arms were now visibly shaking as they struggled to put each weight down but at last they made it and they had done it. They climbed up the steps completely exhausted and were applauded by the pool attendant.

They swung their arms around to get fresh blood and oxygen to the muscles in their shoulders before returning the weights to the attendant. They then asked if they could go up and have a sauna and Jacuzzi.

The bubbling hot water soothed the aching muscles as they all stood inside the Jacuzzi.

Ronnie didn’t want to get out but Roger called a halt after thirty minutes. Then they showered again before going into the sauna. Someone had put eucalyptus on the coals earlier and they could still smell it as they closed the door and set their towels down. The lads sat at the top which was actually hotter than the bottom given the principal that hot air rises. It took them a good five minutes to get acclimatized to the temperature but Brenda soon changed all that when she ladled more water on the coals and the steam rose taking their breath away.

“Wow that is hot said Ronnie.’

“It could be as high as forty degrees where you may be sent to stated Barbara; better get used to it.’

“Bloody masochists.’

Barbara and Ann were used to the heat as they came for a sauna and solarium every week to cleanse their pores out. “No wonders your skin is so clear said Roger.’

“We have a tanning table at the back of the shop too so we take turns going on it.

“I thought that you’d just come back off a holiday. Well we were in Macronosis in Cyprus in August last year; it was very hot there; it’s not far from Ayah Napa.

“Are you going anywhere this year then?

Yes, we were thinking of going to Ibiza in June for a week.’

“Very nice said Ronnie; I’ve never been abroad in my life.’

“Have you Roger?

“Yes, my father took me to Tenerife when I was about four years old. He used some of his redundancy money so we could all go. My mother burnt her shoulders very badly and they were all blistered.
