“How many nights a week do you lads train;  I told you four times a week and have cadets on Friday but now we are stepping it up to five nights a week.’

Roger; come on give me a break; I don’t think my body can cope with all this.’

“Do you want to be a Marine or not?’

“Yes but…

“No buts my friend if we are doing this then we do it right. There is no room for wimps here.’

“Yes Sir, said Ronnie dejectedly.’

Just think in eighteen months we will be the fittest recruits that they’ve ever had nothing they throw at us will faze us.’ Preparation is the key to success Ron remember that.’

“Will there be time for us when you are out playing soldiers asked Brenda.’

If we follow the schedule that I have made out on my computer then there will be lots of time for recreation.’

“You girls will be able to help us as well.’

“We need some one to time us whilst we tread water for twenty minutes. Then we must learn to hold our breath under water for over two minutes.’

“So there is an ulterior motive for getting us to go with you.’

“It doesn’t mean we cannot have some fun afterwards; I reckon we can do the test in on hour and thirty minutes. That allows us ten minutes to recover before treading water. I was schools freestyle champion said Brenda.’ I will teach you how to swim without wasting too much energy.’

“Good that is something we must learn.’

Brenda went through the rudiments of swimming with the lads and breathing techniques which Roger was writing down on a beer mat as they sat.

“Do you want to stay in here or go to somewhere else asked Ronnie.’

“Well there’s the bath assembly room across the road she laughed.’

The got up and headed over the road then up the lane where Ronnie and Ann stopped for a kiss.

“I think that you are really determined to be a Royal Marine aren’t you Roger.’

“Yes; it’s all I’ve ever wanted to be since I was a boy.’

“Are you sure that it’s all Ronnie wants; I know he’s your friend and that you have known each other a long time but don’t make him do what you want to do; he may be afraid of losing that friendship you have if he were to quit.’
