Bang on 9.15 a.m. the door knocker went and Roger went out to meet his friend. Smart lad said Roger as Ronnie wore his suit and tie and highly polished shoes.

They walked up the street to the bus stop.

“They got some admiring looks from some girls as they were standing at the stop.

“Hi Roger said one girl as she played with her curly blonde hair.

“Hi said Roger back not knowing who the girl was.

“You don’t remember us do you said the girl with a smile?’

“Should I?’

“Well not really; but we were in the same class.’

“Roger looked at her again and then it dawned on him that it was Brenda McKenzie and Ann Cosh.

“Sorry Brenda, I didn’t recognise you with all that make up on.’

“This is Ronnie Harris you remember him don’t you.’

“Aye we do; where you both going like all dressed up. You’re not in court are you?’

“No laughed Roger as the bus came and they allowed the girls to get on.

They followed them to the back of the bus after paying their fares at front of the bus. The driver now had to take fares as well as drive the buses now. Conductors were no longer needed and the bus companies made no losses as everyone had to pay before getting on. They both sat behind the girls then told them that they were both going for an interview.

“We work in Chic the hair dressers in Whitley Bay; we are training to be hair stylist’s aren’t we Ann?’

“Aye we are.’

“Well we just enrolled at Tynemouth College and we are doing five A’ levels.’

“You always were a clever bugger said Ann; I remember you getting the top mark in nearly all the subjects at school.

Roger and I are goin’ to enlist in the Royal Marines when we’re eighteen.’

“Oh really; I love a man in uniform smiled Ann Cosh.’

“That’s good to know said Ronnie; maybe you can write to me when I join up.

“Why wait until you join up said Ann.’

Great what do you girls do with yourselves on a weekend?’
