It was a good three quarters of an hour before they found the car. My legs are aching with at that walking said Ann. You lads walk far too fast. No time to hang around in the Royal Marines is there Roger.’

“No; we have learned that speed is essential when covering large amounts of ground.

“Well we aren’t in the Marines yer na said Ann as she slid into the back seat behind Ronnie.’

“Do you want me to drive us back?’

“Go on then Brenda said Roger.’

“You will have to ease the seat forward then so I can stretch my legs said Ronnie as he got in the back.’

“This will only be my second time on a motorway since taking my test.

“Just make sure that you get us home in one piece then will you.’

“The driving instructor commended my driving I will let you know as Brenda asked if everyone was buckled up before setting off for home. Ronnie and Ann closed their eyes and were snoring softly within ten minutes.

It was four forty by the time Brenda reached the Tyne Tunnel. “See almost home; I told you that I was a good driver.’

“I will remember that next time.’ On Friday morning I will leave you the keys; you can drop Ronnie and I off at Newcastle Station; then you can use the car whilst I’m away.’

“I was hoping that you would say that.’

“Seems silly just leaving it outside my house doesn’t it.’

“Don’t worry I will look after it.’

If anything should happen to me whilst I’m away the car is yours.’

“Roger please don’t talk that way; you will come back to me won’t you?’

“Of course I will; wild horses wouldn’t keep me away from you.’

Brenda turned into her street then stopped. Anne and Ronnie woke up immediately.

See you in an hour love said Roger as he slid into the driver’s seat and pulled away.

The young cadets were proud; they stood to attention as Roger and Ronnie inspected them. These lads knew both Roger and Ronnie as they had been in the cadets for three years and had seen the lads go on to become Royal Marine Commandos.

Ronnie and Roger talked with the boys informally and explained what it took to become one of the best fighting men in the forces. When the session was over all the cadets had their photos taken
