10. Chapter Ten

Natalia's POV

"Can I drive?"

"Hell. No." Jason replied.

"What? Please."

"No. You are not going to crash my car."

"I won't. I promise."

"You just got your license. No."

"Jason, please."

"No." He replied, getting in the car. I pouted.

"Alright. Fine." He gave in, handing me the keys. I smiled widely and got in. "I swear, you have to go slow." He said.

"Okay, I will." I smiled, closing the door. I smirked as I pressed on the gas.

"Too fast, Grey!" I laughed loudly and drove off.

"Give me the keys!" Jason yelled, getting out of the car.

"I don't think so."

"Grey, give me the keys. We almost died!"

"Jason, you're drawing attention."

"I don't care. Give me the damn keys."

"What's the magic word?"

"Give me the damn keys before I slit your throat?"

"Dude, why was Talia Grey driving your car?" Jackson asked.

"None of your damn business," Jason replied, storming off.

"What's his problem?" Nick asked, walking to me.

"No clue."

"Something crawled up his ass and died," Jackson said.

"Yo! Summers, don't be a dick all day!" Nick yelled.

"Fuck you!"

"Yo, Talia, wait up," Nick called, running after me.

"What's up?"

"I was wondering if you were free tonight?"

"Um. Yeah, I am, why?"

"I want to take you out to dinner."

"Me?" He nodded. "But... I'm the nerd."

"Yeah? Jason is sitting with you, why can't I?"

I nodded. "Alright."

"And anyway... You're a beautiful girl who deserves to be taken out." I tried to hide my blush by looking to the ground, but that didn't work, as the blush crept all the way up my face, something I can't help.

"What was Nick just saying to you?" Amber asked.

"He asked me out."

"No way!"

"That's... Wow! Lia, you haven't dated in... god, forever."

"I know. I'm actually excited."

"Well, you can keep smiling, while walking to the first block."

"Jason let me drive his car this morning."

"Already?" I nodded. "Why?"

"Because I made him."

"Lia, do you still like him?"

"What? No." I laugh, as my voice went up. She looked at me. "Okay. Maybe."

"Lia, you know he only dates girls who opens her legs." The one thing about Amber, she always has something to say about things. She can't keep her mouth shut. "Unless you're one of those girls... then, I'm sorry, but you have no chance."

I took a deep breath. "I know... but it wouldn't hurt to have a little crush." With the person, I'm living with.

Amber and I walked into our first block, and sitting in the seat next to mine were the one and only Jason Summers. "What are you doing in this class?"

"I got transferred."

"Into this class?"

"My seat. Amber's seat."

"Ah, the two besties are sitting behind each other." I nodded and took my notebook out of my backpack.

"Good morning class. We have a new student in our class today. He transferred from regular nutrition... Jason Summers." Mrs. James informed. Whispers went around the room about him being in this class. And I'm wondering why he's here as well.

"Hello beautiful." Nick smiled, coming up to my locker

I smiled, "hey."

"I'm excited for tonight."

I smiled and closed my locker, "me too."

"I have a nice thing planned. I'm thinking a movie, and maybe some dinner."

"Sounds lovely." He nodded and put his arm around me.

Jason's POV

I watched Nick put his arm around Talia. I could've sworn I felt my face red. I honestly felt steam come out of my ears, like the animated characters in those cheesy cartoons. "Yo! Nick!"

"Hey, Summers." He pulled Talia closer to him and judging by the way her body tensed, she didn't like it.

"Can we talk?"

"Sure man."

"What's u-"

"Stay away from Talia."

"Stay. Away. From. Talia."

"Why? You two aren't a thing."

"You know I like her. Why go and do all this shit?"

"I'm sorry I like her."

"No. You don't like her. You want to one-up me because I took Sofia from you."

He rolled his eyes. "You're crazy Summers."

"I mean it, Nick. Stay away."

"Try me, Summers." Oh, I will, Nick.

"What did Nick say to you?"

"Nothing," Talia replied

I slammed my hand down on the wall. "Talia, what did he say?"

"He asked me out on a date. Jesus, Jason."

"Did you say yes?"

"Of course I said yes." Goddammit.

"Dammit, Talia."

"I'm sorry that I wanted to go on a date."

"No, Talia, it's not a date. He's doing this to get back at me."

"Get back at you? Why?"

"Because I took Sofia from him."

"If it's not a date, then what is it?"

I took a deep breath. "He just wants to get in your pants."

"You're sick." Saw that one coming.

"You think I'm kidding? Look, I'm looking out for you, Talia."

"I'm a big girl, Jason. I can handle things on my own." Not with Nick you can't. Some girls who went out with him came back the next day looking terrible. Hickeys, hand marks, just... things people shouldn't see. Granted, I left some marks on girls, but they didn't come to school with full on marks.

Natalia's POV

I walked down the stairs in heels, a skirt and a tank top, and trust me, it was a struggle getting down the stairs. "Where are you going looking so fancy?" Mrs. Summers asked. After Jason told me about her condition, I look at her different, which is something I never wanted to happen, but I can't help it.

"I'm going on a date."

"Really? With who?"

"Jason's friend?" I nodded. "Oh, that's great, honey." She pressed her frail fingers against her lips as if trying to remember something. "Oh, your mother called. She won't be back for another few months. Your Aunt is still sick, but she needs some help around the house. Your mother and Zac are staying to help her."

"She doesn't even care about her own children."

"Don't say that. I'm sure your mother loves you very much." I shook my head.

"After she met Zac... she started to not care."

"Listen, I'm here for you and Macey."

"Thank you, Mrs. Summers."

"Now, tell me, do you really want to go on this date?"

"Not really." I laughed.

"That's what I thought. But you don't want to blow him off."

"Mrs. Summers.... Jason said something about Nick wanting to get back at him for taking Sofia."

"Oh, yeah... Nick is crazy like that."

"I just want one guy who is nice."

"He'll be there one day. Maybe he's even in your life."

"Tell me, what do you think of Jason?"

"Jason? Um... He's nice when he wants to be."

"Do you like him?" Blunt much?

"You can tell me."

I sighed, "yes."

"Then what's stopping you from going after him?"

"I'm the nerd, Mrs. Summers. He has a reputation."

"Oh, honey, no. No, no."

"I'm getting Jason into some dancing classes. Maybe you should go too."

"Oh... I know how to dance."

"Really?" I nodded. "My dad once taught me when I was little. Granted, I had to step on his feet, b-" I stopped my story when all of a sudden, she started to breath heavily. "Mrs. Summers? Are you okay?" I asked. She held onto the table, trying not to drop down to the floor. "Mrs. Summers." I said, holding her up. She let go of the table, and fell onto the floor. "Mrs. Summers! Jason!"

"Jason!" I screamed.

Jason came running down the stairs holding Macey in his arms. "What?" He asked, running over to me.

"Your... your mom... she... she collapsed."

Jason paced the hospital, as we waited for further news. "Jason, it's alright."

"How do you know that Talia! She only has two months left!" I looked down, knowing he's only taking his hurt out. "I'm sorry for shouting at you. Alright, I'm sorry. It's just..." He stopped talking and shook his head. He looked up to the plain ceiling.

"Jason, we heard," Jackson said, walking into the hospital. Jason nodded and patted all their backs, thanking them for coming to support him through this.

Jason's brown hair was disheveled, as he laid down on the floor. I sighed, "Jason, don't lay on the floor." He got up, and walked over to me. He put his head on my lap, and closed his eyes. "Oh." I whispered. He took my hands, and put them in his hair. I did what my mind told me to do at this moment and run ran my hands through his greasy and disheveled hair.

"No news is good news, Jason," I whispered.

"No news is good news." He repeated.

"Keep saying that."

"Will you stay here?"

"Of course, I'm not leaving."
