Fortunes |Book One|

Admit it, there's always a weird kid in the back of the class that nobody talks to. Don't pretend it's not true, because it is and you know it. People will always talk about how weird they are, but maybe that's because those kids are special. I'm not talking "Special help" special, or they have a mental condition, I'm talking special powers, abilities far beyond that of your imagination. These people are the weird kids in the back of the class for one reason only, they don't want anyone to know. When their secrecy is threatened, things can get...messy.

5. Chapter 5: Abilities

"Attention everyone!" Mrs. McGuffin called, which was completely unnecessary for multiple reasons. The first being that everyone in the hall was already staring at them expectantly, the second was that there was probably only around fifty people in the hall, including the teachers, students, bellhops, kitchen staff, and a few other people who Sorcellerie assumed where the gardeners and grounds keeper if their clothing and tools on their belts were anything to go on. "I would like to introduce our newest student, Miss Sorcellerie Prophetie. That will be all, you may go back to your meals now."

The groundskeeper, gardeners, bellhops, and kitchen staff took off into the next room, and Sorcellerie was led to a table near the end of the hall. Alkhimiya saw her and waved from the end of the table.

"These are the other students in your year, I trust you will introduce yourselves and tell Miss Sorcellerie your abilities?" Mrs. McGuffin said sternly as she departed.

Sorcellerie sat down next to Alkhimiya and looked at the people before her. The boy she had seen in the hallway earlier was at the table too. Maybe she would get to hear his ability now.

"Let us start the introductions now, yeah?" Alkhimiya said, breaking the awkward silence that had fallen over the table. "We've already been introduced, but I haven't told you my ability have I? I can turn things into anything I wish, so long it is of equal value."

Seeing the confused look on Sorcellerie's face, she took a glass of water and placed it between them. "Watch this."

The young Russian's fingertips began to glow blue. When they stopped, she pointed to the glass, the water had disappeared leaving a dark red liquid. "You turned water into wine?" Sorcellerie asked quietly. "That's amazing."

Alkhimiya smirked and put her finger to her lips in a gesture that said 'shush' before downing the wine in one drink.

"I'm Aervisce and this is my younger brother Cretine," the girl across from Sorcellerie spoke up.

"Only by one minute! That doesn't count Aer!" Complained the boy next to her, Cretine.

The pair looked nearly identical, they were of average height and unlike Alkhimiya they were built more like living humans that skeletons with skin, infact most would call them pleasantly plump. They were pale with freckles, and each of them had a pair of bright green eyes and a mane of ginger ringlets. They both wore the black pants uniforms and each spoke with an irish accent.

"It does, mum even says so!" Aervisce replied. "Anyway, we have control over the elements. I control water and air and Cretine can control fire and earth."

"I can speak for myself Aer!" Cretine complained. "We would show you what we can do but our abilities tend to be a wee bit on the destructive side."

They fell silent, when all their eyes fell on the quiet boy who looked like death itself.

"Introduce yourself Jinseinoshi," Alkhimiya suggested. "She does not bite."

"My name is Jinseinoshi," He didn't just look grim, he sounded grim when he spoke. "I have the powers of life and death."

"So you can bring the dead back to life?" Sorcellerie asked excitedly.

"It's not that simple. I can give and take life force, yes, however if I take life force I gain the life force I am taking, but if I give life force, that life force gets taken away from me. I could bring the dead back to life, but it would require me dying in return, the world must stay in balance," he explained. "I also can sense the presence of familial deaths in a person's conscious as well as thoughts of death and a person's will to live or lack thereof."

"Here, let us show her," Alkhimiya suggested, taking a knife and slicing into her palm. Then, stretching it across the table to Jinseinoshi she continued. "Bring the dying tissues to life again."

The grim looking boy took Alkhimiya's bleeding hand and placed it between his own. His hand's became encased in a dark shadow, while Alkhimiya's injured hand began to glow with a faint white light. When the glow and shadow faded, Alkhimiya took her hand back and showed it to Sorcellerie. Where there had previously been a bleeding gash, there now was a pale palm without so much as a scar.

Sorcellerie could only gasp. "Woah."

"It's neat, no?" Alkhimiya asked, beginning to eat.

"It's really, not. It's far too much responsibility, I've nearly killed people by accident," he told her and once again the conversation fell dead.

"Well, what can you do?" Cretine asked, after a moment of silence.

"I can see glimpses of the future," she told them. "Please don't tell my Father though, I get this odd feeling of dread whenever I try to tell him."

"That could be a sign of danger," Jinseinoshi replied. "You should be careful."

"Thanks, I will," Sorcellerie replied.

That night Sorcellerie went to bed wondering what the next day of classes had instore for her. When she awoke the next day, she got into her uniform and looked at the clock on her bedside table. It was six thirty, her classes didn't start for another two hours. Maybe she should look around a bit before going to breakfast, it couldn't hurt to learn more about the school, could it?

Sorcellerie left her room and began to wander off down the hall, with no particular destination in mind. As she turned at the end off the hall to go up the stairs, she heard a blood curdling scream, followed by the hall filling with smoke and a fire alarm ringing.

Author's note!

Some name explanations as promised.

Sorcellerie (Sore-sell-rie) Prophetie (Pro-fet-ie) - Witchcraft Prophecy in French.

Alkhimiya (Al-he-mia) Koldovstvo (cold-est-ev-o) - Alchemy Witchcraft in Russian.

Jinseinoshi (Jin-say-no-she) Majutsu (ma-jut-soo) - Life-Death Witchcraft in Japanese.

Cretine (cree-tine) Draiochta (Dry-och-ta) -  Fire-Earth Magic in Irish Gaelic.

Aervisce (Eh-er-vise-key) Draiochta (Dry-och-ta)- Water-Air Magic in Irish Gaelic.

I used google translate, so the pronunciations might be off, they are each named after their abilities in their native (first) language/the language of the country their bloodline originated in (the Propheties originated in France, so Sorcellerie's name is French, the Koldovstvos originated in Russia, so Alkhimiya's name is Russian). I hope this helps everyone, let me know if I wrote the pronunciations wrong or I've made any other mistakes.
