“Greta opened it and J.J slipped inside She had taken her beret off and by the fire light she looked even more beautiful.

He set the sack down on the table and Greta started to unpack it. There was butter, some cheese, bread, Corned beef, Spam, and some coffee and sugar.

“Where you get all food from she asked.’

“I asked around.’

Thank you. Johnny.’

He liked the way she called him by his name as he sat at the small table in the house.

“My er mutter in sleep; I make Coffee Johnny ya?’

“Alright then said J.J; as she heated a pan over the fire.

He watched her intently as she moved purposefully around the room.

She took out two aluminium mugs then spooned the coffee into the mugs then added some sugar. She looked at him and smiled showing a set of perfect teeth.

Her lips were full unlike his wife’s whose lips he thought were thin in comparison.

When the water was boiled she filled the cups then brought it over and sat on the small rug beside him and looked up at him.

“You have family In England Johnny yes,

“Yes I do; I have two boys;

“You have woman too.’

“My wife is a drunk Greta; J.J pointed to an empty wine bottle.

“Ah I understand Johnny. You look sad you no love her?

“I… used to he said but now…

“You are good man Johnny she said touching his hand.

“J.J felt the softness of it and closed his eyes briefly then took a sip of the coffee.

“Coffee good ya?

“Yes, It’s very good Greta.’

“You sleep here tonight Johnny?’

“I cannot tonight Greta I have to get back but maybe another time.’

J.J stood up and he walked towards the door and Greta followed him she took his arm and turned him towards her and her strength surprised him. She kissed him full on his lips. It had been over nine months since he’d kissed Emily and that was just a peck at the door when he’d left. The kiss he was having now set all of his emotions racing and he drew her towards him and returned her kiss. He didn’t want to go but he knew that he had to.

“I see you tomorrow Johnny yes?’

“Yes Greta, tomorrow. He kissed her again then ran down the street and into the darkness. He returned to his unit thirty minutes later then went and lay on his bunk.

He couldn’t stop thinking about this young woman who had rekindled his passion.

He hoped that his unit wouldn’t be called away tomorrow; he couldn’t bear not seeing her again. He eventually closed his eyes at two o’clock and drifted off to sleep.

The next day the soldiers were ordered to dig trenches and re-inforce them with bags filled with earth. He was to by his commanding officer that a German patrol was on its way and they had to hold this village until another unit came to help them.’
