12. Chapter 12 : A Melody

Helen's POV

I stood with Calum at the airport. He smiled at me and was carrying his bags for the trip. I wasn't prepared to have Calum leave me once again. However, I knew if I didn't let him chase his dreams, I'd be kicking myself later for it.

"You okay?" He asked.

I nodded, "Isn't the first time we're gonna be apart for a long period of time. Won't be the last."

He smiled meekly and lifted my hand before pressing a kiss on my hand. He let it linger for a while. His eyes gleaming under his trucker cap.

"Has Calum begun crying yet?" Michael laughed.

Calum rolled his eyes, "Not yet."

"Helen, I'm gonna miss you," Luke pulled me into a hug. He squeezed me tightly until it felt like my lungs were out of the air. "You'll join us, right? At the house and on tour too. No buts."

I laughed, "Yes, Luke I'll be there. Can't let you guys have all the fun in England."

"See you, kiddo." Ashton hugged me. Michael joined in as well.

They pulled away. Calum held me once again. There was a feeling of longing that crept under his skin. He dug his fingers into my waist. The airport around us was busy and loud, but there was a bubble of silence that surrounded Calum and me. He squeezed me one more time before letting me go. He pulled away and looked at me with those brown eyes that hold so much wonder and love.

"I'll see you in two months," Calum smiled.

"Or sooner," I said playfully and pecked his lips once more.

"I love you," He added. "Oh!" A look a realization flashed across his eyes. "I almost forgot!" He reached for something in his back pocket. He pulled out a gift-wrapped rectangle and handed it to me.

I furrowed my eyebrows, "What's this?"

He shrugged, "Just a little something. Open it in the car, okay?"

I nodded.

"I love you." I called out as he turned his back to me and walked away with Luke, Ashton, and Michael.

I stayed at the airport until the plane left. A feeling of dread settled onto my heart when the plane touched off the runway. Little by little the plane grew farther away, yet I still stayed glued to the window. As if he were going to come back that instant. But he wasn't.

I sighed and turned my back on the wide window before walking away.

When I got in Luke's car, I examined the gift. I ripped away the paper to reveal a mixtape. It was labeled 'Helen.' Without hesitation, I slipped it into the car stereo. The familiar guitar began to play and I nearly started crying when I realized it was Piledriver Waltz by Arctic Monkeys. The same song we danced to at my graduation party. When he surprised me with our dance.

It was Robbers by The 1975 that really got me to tears. The song that always came to mind when I saw him. The song played in my head every damn time he walked into the room. It was a song that I never got tired of and Calum knew it. He knew me too well.
