Prologue: Curse that stupidly perfect voice!

December 16th, 2011

Pushing my way through the small hallway, I yanked on the bags hanging from my shoulders and arms, cursing to myself as a strap caught on a doorknob - again. I could hear the loud laughter and playful arguing coming from the room in front of me, huffing out a breath of annoyance. They were messing around while I was stuck in this stupid hallway - typical! A deafening crash sounded, making my head jerk up in surprise. What the hell were they doing in there?

With a final tug, I tumbled through the doorway, falling face first into the plush brown carpet. The room went silent and I could feel four sets of eyes on me. I could feel my cheeks heating as I pushed myself to my knees. The unmistakable sound of my brother's laughter flooded the otherwise quiet room, making my already warm cheeks burn. I sent him a glare as I pushed myself onto my knees, shooting warning looks at the other three boys in the room.

"Thanks for the help you guys," I huffed, letting the straps of my bags slip down my arms. The bags landed with a soft thump next to me, making me wince. A soft chuckle sounded from in front of me, a breath hitting the side of my neck. I jerked back in surprise, bumping my head against something hard. I lifted my gaze as I rubbed the back of my head only to find the startled blue eyes of Luke. He rubbed his cheek and winced in pain.

"Shit, Ashy," he whined, backing away from me. My eyes widened in surprise and I pushed to my feet.

"Oh my god, are you okay?" I asked worriedly, my hands reaching for the boy's face. I had to stand on my tippy toes in order to reach him, my small frame only reaching his shoulder. He flinched as my fingers replaced his on his jaw, but he let me examine the wound. It wasn't bad - not even bruising. "You're such a baby, Lukey."

He smiled sheepishly down at me, his blue eyes dancing. I patted his cheek before turning away from him. I lifted my eyebrow when I caught sight of Michael and Calum making kissy faces behind Luke.

"You two are so immature!" I huffed, spinning around to pick up my bags. A blush crept up my neck at the thought of Luke kissing me and I swallowed. Stalking to the center of the room, I set the three bags down and peered around the room. Where should I make them sit?

Turning towards the windows, I smiled. Marching to the corner, I began to drag the Christmas tree across the room. The boys - being the boys - ignored my presence and went back to messing around. I blew out a breath of annoyance. They're so lazy!

I managed to get the tree in front of the windows in just a few minutes, smiling triumphantly at my success. I glanced around the room once more, ignoring the rowdy boys. I spotted the big grey armchair in the opposite corner. Nobody was lounging on it, so I dragged it to the left of the tree. Backing up, I looked over my handy work with a smile. It would work.

Returning to the bags I'd dropped, I unzipped the largest one. Kneeling beside it, I pulled the out collapsible tripod and began to set it up. Angling it toward the tree, I reached for the next bag. It was slightly smaller, but not by much.

"Are you just going to sit there?" I called to the boys with a frown, pulling my video camera out of the bag. Setting it on the tripod, I made sure it was firmly attached before letting go. "Come on, boys, in front of the tree!"

Michael and Luke tripped over each other, scurrying to the only chair near the tree. Michael shoved Luke away from him, flinging his own body down on the lay-z-boy. Surprised, Luke stumbled backwards and his body colliding with Calum's. They both fell to the floor, curses spewing from both of their mouths. Laughter filled the room as the two untangled themselves from each other. I couldn't help the giggle that escaped me, but the laughter died in my throat as a deep chuckle joined in.

I looked up from behind my camera, my eyes landing on the one boy who gave me butterflies. Ashton was perched on his box drum watching the others. His hair was lying flat across his forehead and his hazel-green eyes narrowed as he laughed. My lips involuntarily lifted at the corners, a smile sneaking onto my face. Why was he so adorable?

I shook myself, focusing my attention on my camera. Ignore him. Training the camera on the boys sitting in front of me, I rolled my eyes again. Luke and Calum were seated on the floor between the other two. Luke kept shoving Michael's leg, who kicked back. Their bickering was giving me a slight headache and all I wanted to do was go back to bed. We were supposed to make this video yesterday, but Ashton had a test. So we have to do it now.

"Alright boys, we need to get going so I can edit before I post it," I had to raise my voice to make them hear me. They all quieted down, turning to face me.

"ASHLEY,OUR VOICES ARE PERFECT! YOU DON'T NEED TO EDIT IT!" my brother yelled, making me wince. It was true. They all have amazing voices, and I do mean amazing.

"You know what I mean, Michael." I groaned, pushing my glasses up my nose. Yeah, I was one of those blind girls with dorky glasses. "I have to edit out your mess ups."

Michael glared at me, but I just smiled lightly and fiddled with my pigtail braid. The other boys laughed as Michael began muttering under his breath. "Alright, are you ready Mikey?"

He just nodded.

"Put your pretty smile on, you don't want the girls to see you like this." I shot him a wink. My twin rolled his eyes, but his lips pulled up into a smile. I grinned back at him before ducking behind the camera again. "Okay, and we're rolling in 5, 4..."

I trailed off, continuing my countdown on my fingers. I hit the record button as my countdown hit one and let the boys take over. They all offered a 'hello' before Michael spoke up.

"So this is our new drummer Ashton," Michael stated, pointing to the older boy. "And he is in the band..again. Incase we don't upload the other video..."

"What other video?" Calum asked in confusion. They all mumbled something as I attempted to hold in my laughter. "Oh my god."

"So happy to be here." Ashton said, smiling at me. I mean the camera, he smiled at the camera.

"Alright, lets go." Luke stated.

Ashton started up a beat on the drum, biting his bottom lip. Damn that was hot. Wait - focus, Ashley!

"Oh yeah! This Is 'Teenage Dirtbag'" Michael laughed before joining in on the guitar. I turned my eyes away from Ashton, trying to focus on the video.

Calum started singing softly, his smooth voice hitting every note right on. I smiled as his lips formed the words easily, letting the music wrap around me.

"Her name's Noelle

I had a dream about her

She rings my bell

I got gym class in half an hour

Oh how she rocks

in keds and tube socks.

She doesn't know who I am

and she doesn't give a damn about me."

Michael and Luke started singing along, harmonizing as they went. It was truly amazing how well their voices blended together.

"'Cause i'm just a teenage dirt bag baby

yeah, I'm just a teenage dirtbag baby

listen to iron maiden baby, with me, oh."

After a short instrumental solo, Luke picked up the lyrics again, a slight smirk on his lips. His voice was perfect. Like an angel really.

"Her boyfriend's a dick

he brings a gun to school

he'd simply kick my ass if he knew the truth

he lives on my block

and drives an I-Roc

and he doesn't know who I am

and he doen't give a damn about me,"

Calum and Michael joined Luke at the chorus. I grinned when I saw Ash singing along. Michael told me he had a great voice, but I'd never heard him sing. I couldn't pick his voice out when he joined in.

"'Cause I'm just a teenage dirtbag baby

yeah, I'm just a teenage dirtbag baby

listen to Iron Maiden baby, with me, oh"

Luke solo-ed again, bobbing his head to the beat. He looked so into the music, it made me wish I could sing like them.

"oh yeah, dirtbag.

no she doesn't know what she's missing

yeah, dirtbag.

no she doesn't know what she's missing."

Then it was Michael's vocal solo. His voice was pretty amazing. I was always jealous of his talents. It was so unfair! We had the same genes, so why hadn't I inherited the angel-like singing voice? Sure I could sing, but nowhere near as well as my twin.

"Man I feel like mold

it's prom night and I'm lonely lo and behold

she's walking over to me this must be fake

my lips start to shake

how does she know who I am?

why does she give a damn about me?"

There was a small pause as the boys quieted, then Ashton started the drums again, Michael lightly strumming and Luke began to sing softly.

"She said I've got two tickets to Iron Maiden, baby

come with me friday, don't say maybe

I'm just a teenage dirtbag baby, like you oh

ooh yeah, dirtbag

no she doesn't know what she's missing"

Calum's smooth voice joined Luke's.

"ooh, dirtbag

she doesn't know what she's missing"

Ashton and Michael continued playing, Luke and Calum throwing out random 'yeah's every so often before my brother ended it.

"See ya guys!" Calum shouted as he jumped up and walked out of the room. I let out a small giggle.

"Merry Christmas!"

"Thanks for watching!"

And of course Calum snuck up behind me and did his batman impression. Laughing, I switched my camera off, grinning at the boys.

"Well, that's a wrap!" I called out.

"FINALLY! I'M STARVING ASHLEY!" Michael yelled in my ear. I swatted at him, glaring as the others laughed.

"Well what do you want me to do about it Mike?" I quizzed. "I have to go edit this and then upload it."

"But Ash! Can't you make us food first?" Calum begged.

"Please?" Luke threw in with a puppy dog look, his bright blue eyes widening slightly. I almost crumbled at that. Key word here: almost.

I felt someone's hot breath on the back of my neck, butterflies erupting in my stomach. Shit. I looked at the boys in front of me, counting them. Where did Ashton go?

"Ashley," his breath tickled my ear as his husky voice whispered my name. My heart was racing, my skin tingling. My eyes fluttered closed as I tried to calm my breathing. How was he pulling this reaction from me?

"W-what do you w-want Ash?" I stuttered. He was my weakness - not that anyone knew that. His voice was rough but sweet. I loved it.

His arms wrapped around my waist and my eyes snapped open. His hot breath traveled across the back of my neck and I felt his lips gently brush against my bare shoulder, my eyes closing again. Shit, I knew I shouldn't have worn this shirt. It was a few sizes too big and fell off my shoulder more often than not. I mentally berated myself for being so stupid. "Please Ashley, make me food?"

"Mmmkay," I mumbled, too preoccupied by his lips on my skin to realize what I was agreeing to.

Suddenly his heat was gone and my eyes snapped open again as I took in my brother and our friends faces. My cheeks flooded with heat as I realized what had just happened. I was so dumb.

"Wait! I--"

"Too late sweetheart, you already agreed." Ashton's voice came from behind me, cutting my stuttered protests off before they even started. Curse that stupidly perfect voice!

"Damn, if I knew that all it took to get Ashley to make us food was a little lip action.."Calum teased, trailing off when Michael shot him a dirty look and making my blush deepen.

"Dammit, Ash!" Michael yelled, his eyes blazing.

"What?" Ashton and I answered at the same time. Ashton smirked at me while I just glared angrily down at my shoes, my blush deepening. I could still feel his eyes on me and it was getting harder and harder to ignore it. How dare he? Wait - how did he know that would work on me?

"Ashton, don't you ever do that shit with my sister ever again. You hear me?" My brother growled, pulling my attention from my feet. I glanced at the boy next to me, his smirk disappearing and his eyes hardening. He nodded stiffly, clenching his jaw.

Michael stomped out of the room, followed by Calum and Luke who seemed intent on calming my brother down. I stood frozen in place, my eyes refusing to leave Ashton's frustrated face. I didn't know what to do - which emotion to act on - anger or confusion?

My breath caught in my throat when he turned his steely gaze on me. It looked like he was fighting with himself. I wanted to say something, but I wasn't sure what. His eyes softened as he studied my face. His lips flickered to my lips before he sighed, closing his eyes and running a hand through his hair.

"I gotta go," he muttered, turning away from me. I swallowed, licking my lips as he stalked to the door. "I'm sorry, Ashley. I didn't mean anything by it."

My heart felt weird. It was like a strange ache. It wasn't really painful, but it didn't feel good either.

And that's how he left me - confused and angry with an aching heart.
