6. What it Means to be a Rider

Riding a dragon was by far the most incredible experience of my life.  I looked over at Tilm on her dragon, Sash, to see if she found it as marvelous as I was.  Tilm was looking at me with a faint smile on her face. I smiled back, lifted my arms above my head, and let out a shout of pure joy. Beneath me my dragon let out a bone-shattering roar, echoing my joy.
"Free at last," I whispered to myself. Then I turned to Tilm and asked, "Where are we going?"
"To Oasis," she replied.  "The home of the riders."
The home of the riders. The words echoed in my mind. My new home.  If it weren't for the fact that at the moment to sitting on the back of a dragon, I would never have believed it were true.
"What can you tell me about the riders?" I asked.
"I'm not going to give you the entire history of the dragonriders now," Tilm said. "But it won't hurt for you to know some of the basics before we get to Oasis.  The riders were formed thousands of years ago by a man name Jason.  He was the very first person to ever discover the dragons.  When others found out about the dragons there was chaos. Some people wanted to protect them. Others wished to kill each and every one of them off. The result of the mixed feelings was a civil war that lasted ten years.  The war was ended by Jason.  He caused this by connecting to the dragon named Lordan.  By connecting to Lordan, Jason proved that humans and dragons could coexist peacefully.  However, there were still those who believed that the dragons should be killed.  To resolve this, all the humans were grouped into cities.  The citizens of those cities were never aloud to leave unless they were on the back of a dragon.  That is only a very brief version of such history though, and you will be required to learn the entire litany very soon. The only other thing you need to know right now is that the dragonriders are here to protect.  A rider has great responsibility.  To be a rider means everything. You will represent loyalty, courage, compassion, wisdom, strength, and, most of all, justice. When trouble comes everyone will look to you. You must learn to at least act like there is hope when there seems to be none and be strong when others can't.  You will set the mood and everyone else will follow.  They will trust you and look to you when they need help. I know you are strong enough for this and that is why you were chosen. Any questions?"
Tilm's voice was so sure and confident that I felt her confidence flow into me. I thought for a moment then asked, "What is my dragon's name?"
Tilm laughed. "She will tell you when she is ready. I suggest that you now think on what I have told you as well as simply enjoy the sensation of flying until we reach Oasis."
"Very well," I said and thought of how lucky I was that my only dream came true and the deep meaning behind the words Tilm had spoken.  I was glad Tilm was guiding me. I would do everything I could to set the mood right.  I would be the heart and soul of all people's faith in all the qualities of a rider.  I would be everything Tilm expected of me. I would be what it meant to be a rider.
