Chapter 8-Racing

When the movie ended we do what we always do, we stand up and clap really loudly. We act like its the end of a concert, screaming and yelling. Jason looked pretty freaked out when, Lily jumped up and started clapping really loud then we joined in. He just sat there looking horrified and a like embarrassed.

He was still looking a little embarrassed when we left the theater, he became more embarrassed when Travis lit up a cigarette right next to the "No Smoking" sign but he didn't say anything.

"What shall we do now?" Travis asked as he exhaled smoke.

I thought for a second then I grinned at everyone, there puzzled faces stared back at me.

"Let's do what we love to do after movies." I said with a smirk.

"Do you mean, what I think you mean?" Beth asked me.

"Guys, get your cars ready." Lily chimed in.

Before I knew it, we were at the old, abandoned warehouse. There's a strip of cement in front and we always come here when we're bored and wanted to race. Since I don't have a car I get the lovely job of saying go.

Buster and Travis have a small, Toyota. Ryan has a big black truck. Max in his mini van. And Beth is driving her little crappy car. All there vehicles are lined up on one side of the strip. I walk to the center of them. There motors running loudly and there music blasting.

"Okay, guys," I yell to them, "you know the rules, first person back to there stop wins. Down the strip and back. No running into each other. No trying to hit the people on the side lines." I gesture to Lily and Jason leaning on Lily's car. "And no cheating. Got it! Okay. On my count." I put my hands over my head, "Three, Two, One, Go!" I pulled my hands down. I feel the cars running past me, my heart jumps like it always does.

I spin around to see the back of there cars racing away. I run over to Lily and Jason, Lily is jumping up and down cheering them on. Jason still looks uncomfortable but there is a small smile on his face.

I see they are starting to come back, Ryan and Max are in front neck and neck, Travis and Buster close behind with Beth bring up the rear.

You could barely hear Lily and I cheering over the screeching of the cars coming to a stop.

"Ha ha Losers!" Lily gloated, "My boyfriend won, again." Max pretty much always won. Lily ran over the Max and started to kiss him.

"Get a room!" Buster yelled as he was getting out of his car.

I walked over to Beth with a smile on my face. "You lost again." I said with a smirk.

"Hey, don't say that word around the car." She said gesturing to the piece of crap she called a car.

"What word?" I said going with the act. "Oh, did you mean, lost!" I yelled the last word at the car.

"No!" Beth joked back, a grin on her face. "Not the L word!" Me and Beth were now both laughing, and someone was laughing from behind me too. I look behind me to find Jason laughing, I think it's the first time I've heard him laugh.

"What's so funny, Square?" I snapped at him.

He tried to hold back his smile but it did work "Nothing," he said quietly. "You two are just fun to watch." I never thought of me and Beth as fun to watch, and I don't no if I liked it or not.

"Shit!" I heard Travis yell, "What time is it?"

"5:24," Max responded, "Why?"

"Shit, shit, shit, I gotta go." Travis said getting into his car.

"Hey what's up Trav?" Beth asked.

"I have family counseling at 5:30 and if I'm late my dad's gonna ground my ass." He said with a grumpy look on his face.

"When did the family counseling start?" Buster asked with a worried look on his face.

"My parents decided last week we needed it to sort out my problem." His face full of disgust.

"Oh man, that sucks." Max added.

"Yeah," Travis said nodding his head. "Well, I gotta go. See you guys tomorrow. Nice to meet you, Jason." Jason nodded his head to Travis. "Buster you need a ride?"

"Yeah," Buster said getting into Travis's car. He waved to us as they backed up and pulled out of the parking lot.

We left soon after Travis and Buster had gone. Beth had to be home before 6:00 and she was my ride.

We didn't talk on the way home, and the radio was the only thing keeping us from awkward silence. When we were almost home Jason finally said something to break the music.

"Ummm, can I ask something?" He asked over the music.

Beth turned down the music some and answered. "Yeah go head."

"What was Travis's problem?" He said curiosity.

"Is that any of your business?" I snapped before I could stop myself.

"Emma!" Beth said in surprise. She gave me a look.

"No, she right it's none of my business," Jason said quietly. "Sorry for asking." He looked out the window.

Beth gave my a glare, and I just shrugged. It was none of Jason's business, but I knew I need to tell him. I turned around in my seat to look at him, he looked from the window into my eyes.

"About a month ago, Travis came out of the closet." I started. "And it was a real shock for his family. Travis did sports, he talked about cars, he dated girls. He was never into makeup or drama or anything to indicate he was gay." Jason nodded as I talked. "He said that his dad was so mad at him, couldn't even look at him. His mom was so said upset, she started to cry. And his older brother was so shocked he left the room right after Travis told him." Jason nodded again but slower this time. "Travis said he would not have been able to with stand his family's reaction if Buster had not been standing next to his holding his hand." Jason smiled at that. "So that's it." I said with a shrug. "That's Travis's problem."

"How long has Travis and Buster been together?" Jason asked.

"I have no idea. They told us the same day Travis told his parent." I said honestly. "They have been friends since like kindergarten, and they always hung out together. They could have been together for months before they told us and we wouldn't have known the difference." Jason nodded. I turned back around in my seat. The rest of the ride home was with out talking.
