Chapter 30 ( Part 1 )

*Cora's POV*

Today was finally the day. The day the door to the rest of my life opens. Graduation day. I was excited beyond belief. I would finally be leaving this place. I didn’t have to worry about my father for the moment. I had a day of celebration without any worry.

Zach and I had been perfect. After we had kissed that night, we went home and watched old movies together. The next night he took me on our first official date and asked me to be his girlfriend. Like always, the news of our relationship spread like wildfire and rumors began. A lot of people judged us. Many said I wasn't right for him or that I was just in it for the money. I personally hated when people said that because of how sensitive Zach is about it, but I guess it’s something that will always happen. I was extremely nervous at first to tell anyone about our relationship. I nearly begged Zach to keep it a secret until after graduation, but he insisted on showing me off. He said that he deserved it after years of trying to get my attention.

Other than all the other rumors, the drama in our life was finally over. We were finally together, going to the same college and hopelessly in love. Nothing could be better. Zach was still pissed at Luke for whatever reason, but feels like a dick for screaming at him. Adam hasn’t been around much, but always seems to be around Luke most of the time. He was always over at Luke’s house when I went over to spend time with him. It was weird, but kind of cute. I figured they were just roommates.

A few weeks ago, Zach had asked me to prom and I, of course, said yes. He did it in the cutest way. He had left a trail of notes all around the house with clues to where he would be. He sent me all over the city to different spots where we had the fondest memories before finally ending up in the park. It had taken me forever to find all the notes, so by the time that I got to the park it was dark. He made up for it though, due to the adorable display he created. He set up rows of candles that led me down a path. Flowers were set up every once in awhile and some of my favorite things were given to me by some of my friends, who lined the path. I remember walking up to the gazebo that was at the end if the path. He was standing in the center of it and I remember thinking that he was incredibly attractive in that lighting. The candles on the ground and around the gazebo lit up his eyes and made the dark brown a lighter color. He looked more alive than usual and more importantly he looked happy. Neither of us had been happy for the longest time and finally we were. He was holding a single daisy, my favorite flower, and was smiling brightly at me. I remember absolutely flipping when he got down on one knee and pulled out a ring box. I hadn't known what he was doing at the time, but turns out he had made tiny rings made of thread and thought it would of been cute to ask me that way. It was very thoughtful of him and it was the cutest thing I had ever experienced. It was my favorite night and I will cherish it forever.

Prom was amazing. He had left the house for the day to allow me the traditional prom night. Mrs. Dawson helped me get ready. She did my makeup and curled my hair before helping me slip into the long red dress I had picked out. Zach arrived back at the house right on time, looking dashing in his suit with the matching red tie. He had gotten me a corsage made of daisies and insisted he put it on for me. Then we left the house after many pictures from Mrs. Dawson. The night was beautiful. I was worried at first about the dancing, but Zach quickly got me to loosen up and dance with him. We truly had a beautiful night. After the dance, Zach ‘dropped me off’ at the house with a peck on the lips. Later that night he came into my room and cuddled with me until we both fell asleep.

Life was great. I rarely worried about my father anymore. I knew that Zach was here to protect me. I knew that he wouldn’t let anything bad happen to me and I finally believed that everything was going to be okay. Standing in front of the mirror, I adjust my dress for the last time, smoothing it down on my legs. Grabbing my graduation cap and gown from off the bed, I walk over to the door and slip into the hallway. Closing the door behind me, a small shriek escapes my lips as I turn around and see Zach standing directly behind me.

“What the hell, Zach! You scared the shit out of me!’ I yelp, slapping his chest.

“Sorry baby. I didn’t mean to.” he pouts as he wraps his arms around my waist.

“Really, Zach? In the hallway?” I whisper, raising an eyebrow.

“What you got a better idea? Wanna use my bed?” he suggests, wiggling his eyebrows.

“No, you pervert.” I scoff, pulling out of his arms.

“But Cora! It’ll be fun!” he jokes, tickling my sides.

“Shut up and let’s go.” I giggle, turning towards the staircase.

Zach sneaks up behind me and throws me over his shoulder.

“Zach! What are you doing?!” I shriek, slapping his back.

“Well I couldn’t just let my lady walk down the stairs on her own, could I?” he chuckles, purposely bouncing down the stairs.

“Well, most guys do, Zach.” I counter.

“Well,” he sighs, placing me on my feet at the bottom of the stairs, “I’m not like most guys.”

“That’s very true. You’re a weirdo.” I tease, turning towards the kitchen.

He dramatically gasps and catches me around the waist before I can enter the kitchen. He pecks me on the cheek and whispers, “Yes, but I’m your weirdo.”

“That’s also true.” I snicker, walking into the kitchen.

“Hey! Don’t leave me!” Zach whines, following in after me.

I give Mrs. Dawson, who’s standing at the counter, a look and place my cap and gown on the counter.

“Zach, you’ve been following that girl around like a lost puppy for weeks now! I think she might need a little space.” Mrs. Dawson comments.

“But…..” Zach trails off, pouting.

A smile makes its way to my face as I walk over to the fruit basket in the corner and hop up on the counter. Picking an apple from the basket, I clean it with a paper towel, before taking a huge bite. Zach wanders over to the counter top beside me and leans against it.

“Well, kids, I’m going to go get dressed so that we aren’t late.” Mrs. Dawson calls, as she leaves the room.

Focusing my attention on the apple in my hand, I continue eating in silence until I finish it. Hopping down from the counter, I throw the apple core into the trash and turn towards Zach. He’s leaning against the counter top still, with his arms crossed over his chest and a pout on his face.

“I’m gonna go up to my room and grab my purse.” I tell him.

“Okay. I’ll stay here.” he grumbles, putting his head down.

Furrowing my eyebrows, a small teasing smirk makes it’s way onto my face as I place my hands on my hips.

“You don’t want to come with?” I ask.

He shakes his head with a frown on his face. Sighing, I go up to my room, quickly grabbing my purse, before heading back down stairs. As I reach the kitchen again, Zach is in the same position as he was before. Placing my purse on the counter beside my cap and gown, I walk over to Zach and stand in front of him. He doesn’t react to me and I take a step closer, leaning against his chest.

“What’s wrong?” I mumble.

“Nothing.” he mutters and I feel him shake his head.

Lifting my head from his chest, I try to look up into his eyes, but he avoids mine.

“Don’t lie to me.” I demand.

“Nothing’s wrong.” he says again.

“That isn’t the truth.” I say in a sing song voice.

“Nothing’s wrong.” he repeats again.

“Zachary Alexander Dawson, don’t you dare lie to me.” I demand, placing my hands on his cheeks.

“I’m fine, Cor.” he mumbles, still not looking at me.

“If everything’s fine, then why won’t you look at me? You haven’t taken your eyes off me in weeks, Zach.” I reply, cocking my head to the side.

Finally, he turns his head and meets my eyes.

“Are you getting tired of me?” he huffs, dropping his arms to his sides.

“What? Of course not.”I say, stroking his cheeks softly.

“It’s just that… said I was following you around a lot….I didn’t know I was….” he trails off.

“Babe….I’m not get tired of you. I love you! Yes, I admit you have been attached to my hip for the past few weeks, but I would have nothing more! I love that you want to be with me all the time. I should be the one asking you if you’re getting tired of me. I could never get tired of you.” I whisper, leaning closer and pressing my lips to his.

His arms wrap around my hips again and he pulls me closer. Our lips move in sync and our tongues battle for dominance. Once we pull apart, he rests his forehead against mine with a sigh.

“I could never get tired of you either.” he breathes out.

“Good. I would be offended if you were.” I grin.

He chuckles, pulling away from me.

“We should go. We’re gonna be late for rehearsal.” he says.

Nodding my head, I grab my stuff off the counter and yell out a goodbye to Mrs. Dawson. We head out the front door with a mixture of excitement and butterflies stirring in my belly.

“You ready for this?” Zach asks, turning around to look at me.

“No.” I shake my head, getting in the car.

“Everything’s gonna okay. It always is.” Zach tells me as he pulls out of the driveway.

Everything’s gonna be okay.
