17. Chapter 16

"What do you mean you know?"

I wince taking a step back.

"I-I.." I stutter out.

"Cora?! What do you mean you know?!"

"I-I, um, I can explain.." I mutter, sighing in defeat.

"Go right ahead" he snaps.

"Can we talk about this somewhere else?" I mumble.

He rolls his eyes and grabs my wrist, dragging me out of the cafeteria.

"Talk." he spats.

"Well, I-I was in the library and I was looking for books. I heard mumbles and so I followed the sound. I saw that it was Nicole and immediately started panicking. My first instinct was to videotape it, so I did. I didn't know if I should tell you. I was worried that you would think that I was lying, so I didn't tell you." I explain, looking down.

"This is too much." I hear him whisper, before his retreating steps are the only things I hear.

I sigh and look around, my mind trying to grasp what had just happened.

"Man that was rough." I hear Amanda mumble.

I whip around glaring at her.

"How much of that did you hear?" I snap.

"All of it. I followed you guys, wanted to make sure that he wouldn't hurt you." she shrugs, brushing it off as if it is nothing, but I can see the gleam in her eye.

"Whatever, I'm going home. I can't take this anymore." I mumble, whipping my tired eyes.

"Okay. Are you coming to the party tonight?" she asks, a smile spreading across her face.

I frown at her giddiness, "No. Why would I?"

"Oh well you should! Zach will probably be there." she grins.

"Really? Hmm, I don't know I might show. I might not though. I don't think that Zach wants to be around me." I mumble, looking down.

"Ok. Well have a good night!" she cheerily says, before turning around skipping off.

I hear her mutter a 'thank god' before she enters the cafeteria. I roll my eyes at her horrible attempts at being subtle. I walk over to my locker grabbing all my books and loading them into my bag. When I look up, a flash of color catches my attention, I glance over at my locker door and see the picture that Zach and I took at the fair last year. A pang of sadness stabs me in the heart at the sight of it and tears well up in my eyes. I sigh, thinking back to that day.

It was a beautiful summer day, the sun was shining and the birds were chirping. I couldn't be any happier than I am now. The wind blowing through my hair because of the open window, my face being hit with crisp morning air. Zach sat in the seat beside me, driving. He would look over at me and smile, every now and then. We had began our journey very early this morning, having to drive six cities over just to go to the fair. I was consumed with excitement and I couldn't stop myself from hanging my head out the window, when the first rollercoaster came into view. I loved the fair. The last time I had been to one was with my mother, on her birthday, when we had wanted to do something special and didn't know what else to do. Every year after her death, I constantly had the urge to go to one, but I thought that I would never have been able to go somewhere that reminded me of her. It would hurt too much, but when Zach had run up to me at school with wide eyes, flushed cheeks, and a giant grin on his face. I couldn't bring myself to say no to him. Once I had said yes, he let out a yell of victory and ran away in excitement. I watched him run around the courtyard with an amused expression on my face, the excitement that this boy had for a fair was adorable, it really showed just how much innocence he still had left. Now here we are, on our way to one of the biggest fairs in the state, too early for anyone to be awake.

Once Zach pulled into the parking lot, I could feel the dread creeping into my body. My heart was pounding, my hands shaking. I saw the entrance sign and nearly broke down in tears. The last time we were here she was alive. She was here living and breathing with me and there was not an ounce of unhappiness. My breathing begins to quicken as soon as he puts the car in park, tears threatening to spill over. An unknown feeling falls over me and my chest feels like it has a vice locked onto it. I struggle to regain my breathing and I begin to gasp.

"Cora?" I hear.

"Oh my god, Cora!" Zach yells, jumping out of the car and running around to my side.

He wrenches the door open, grabbing me by the waist and pulls me to sit between his legs. He presses his chest against my back.

"Breath with me, Cora." he whispers to me.

He holds me in his arms, over exaggerating the movements of his chest when he breathes. He continues to whisper comforting things my ear, hoping to help me to regain my breathing. I sit there gasping for air, thinking that I am about to pass out. Until finally, after the longest five minutes of my life, I am able to breath again.

"Are you okay? What happened?" Zach asks, worriedly.

"I'm fine." I croak, struggling to rise to my feet.

"What happened? One minute you are completely fine and then the next minute you are freaking out and can't breath." he says.

I look down at the ground, "The last time that I was here was with my mom. I haven't been here since her death and it was really overwhelming. I'm sorry that I scared you, I never meant to scare you. I just couldn't help it."

"I'm so sorry. I didn't realize that. We can go back home if you want to." he assures, sincerely.

I look up at him seeing the regret at bringing me here, yet I can still see that immense amount of excitement that filled him. As much as I did want to leave, I couldn't bring myself to tell him to take me home.

"I'm fine. Don't worry. Now let's go on some rides." I smile, seeing as the excitement reappears on his face.

"Come on!" he shouts, running off to the ticket stands.

After we get our tickets, we enter the fair and immediately head for the biggest rollercoaster. After hours of fun, countless rides, and an enormous amount of junk food, there are no more rides left, except for one final one. The Drop Tower Free Fall was the only ride we hadn't went on and it had me shaking in my boots just thinking about it. I was never really a fan of heights, so I hated pretty much anything that had to do with it. I forced myself to go on the roller coasters for Zach, but I really wasn't sure that I would be able to go on this one. No matter how much I wanted to make Zach happy.

"Let's go on the High Drop!!" Zach yells, grabbing my hand and tugging me behind him.

My heart drops into my stomach and I feel the bile rise up in my throat. As he pulls me into the line, I look up to see exactly how tall it is and immediately regret it. The sky drop is nearly 5 stories high and makes me want to pee my pants.

"Zach, I don't think that I can do this.." I whisper, after the line begins to get smaller.

"Sure you can it isn't that bad." he smiles.

"Um for me it is! Are you kidding me it is so freaking tall!!" I screech.

In no time we reach the front of the line, I look up at Zach for some help, but he simply pushes past me to sit in the last remaining chair, leaving me standing in the line by myself. Stare at him as he gets strapped in. After everyone gets strapped in, the operator returns to his station and starts the ride. Zach and the others slowly start to rise into the air. Every move the ride makes, my heart drops farther and farther into my stomach. I was scared. That was an understatement. I was going to die! I can't get on that thing. The ride finally reaches its peak and it immediately rockets straight back to the earth. Once the ride is over, Zach jogs back over to my side and sticks out a hand.

"Can I go again?" he asks the operator.

"Sure." the guy drones.

Zach gives me a large smile and pulls me over to two of the seats, before sitting down in one. He straps himself in and grins over at me.

"Sit down." he says.

"I-I don't think I can do this." I whisper, eyes wide.

"Of course you can. Come on, don't you want me to have a good day." he smiles.

I gulp quietly taking a deep breath.

"You freaking owe me." I groan, before sitting down on the seat.

The operator comes over and helps me buckle my seatbelt in. He walks back over to his station, pushing the button to start the ride. As soon as the ride begins to move, I squeeze my eyes shut, flailing to grasp something sturdy. I hear Zach let out a laugh and then he takes my hand, intertwining our fingers. For the next couple of seconds, we slowly rise to the very top of the ride. My eyes are still tightly sealed shut.

"Open your eyes. Trust me." he whispers.

I sigh, slowly peeling my eyelids back. I gasp at the sight. The sun is high in the sky, but close to setting. We are so high up that I can see the entire park as well as the buildings around it. As we reach the top, I make the mistake of looking down. I hear the click of the machine as it reaches the very top as I stare in terror at the ground. I feel as if we are suspended in the air for a couple seconds, before we are shot back to the ground. A scream leaves my lips and tears spring to my eyes. The feeling of fear a familiar feeling by now. The ride stops and I sit there staring into nothing. Zach gets off, taking my seatbelt off and helping me out of the seat. He walks me to the exit and we sit down on a bench directly next to the ride.

"You okay?" he asks.

I gulp in air, that is not seeming to reach my lungs. I look over at him with wide eyes and the first tear slips out of my eyes.

"That really scared you didn't it?" he says, putting a piece of hair, that had fallen, back behind my ear.

"Yeah." I mumble, wiping my tears away.

"Come on, I'll make it up to you." he tells me, holding out his hand.

I take it and he walks me over to a game booth.

"Step right up! Hit three clowns in 5 tries and you win a prize!!" the announcer yells.

"I'll take one." Zach mutters, handing the man his money.

"Okay go right on ahead." the man says, handing Zach 5 balls.

I watch in awe as Zach picks up his first ball. He throws the ball, sending it sailing straight into clown number one.

"Two more to go!!"

Zach proceeds to pick up another ball, chucking it at the clowns and knocking over the second clown.

"One more to go!!"

He picks up his final ball, turning around to wink at me, before throwing the ball and knocking down the final clown.

"Winner!!!!" the man yells.

"Pick your prize!!"

"Um, I'll take that giant stuffed carrot." Zach chuckles, knowing which one I had been eyeing.

The man hands Zach the carrot and he turns around holding it out the carrot to me with a grin.

"Here you are m'lady." He bows.

I laugh, taking the carrot into my arms.

"Thank you kind sir." I giggle.

"Oh my gosh, Let's take a selfie!" Zach sarcastically says.

He takes out his phone, putting it before us, before taking the one picture that I will remember for the rest of my life.

"Now shall we go home?" he continues.

"We shall." I smile.

*End of Flashback*

A few tears slip down my cheeks at the thought of that memory.

After remembering that, I know exactly what I am going to do. I am going to that party tonight and I am not letting Zach get away, not this time.
