Not In That Way *Completed*

There is always that one little thing that can keep a person stable. That one little thing that makes a person feel alive. The thing that can make a person smile even when they are having a bad day.

For Cora Smith that thing is more like a someone. Her someone is Zachary Dawson. Her long time best friend and the person that saved her when her life was in shambles. For years, she has been battling for his attention against all the other girls around her. However, little did she know she had him wrapped around her little finger since the very beginning.

Join Cora on her journey in discovering the truth about Zachary, while all the while she is consumed with the fear that, in the end, the only words she will hear from him are, "I'm sorry, believe me, I love you, but not in that way......"

*Based on the song, "Not in That Way" by Sam Smith*

12. Chapter 11

"Dinner time!" I hear Mrs. Dawson yell.

I close the math book with a sigh, looking down at my still incomplete homework. I had been staring at the problems for about an hour now, unable to understand any of it. After packing it away and making a mental note to ask Zach later, I jog down the stairs. I walk into the dining room to see the most exquisite set up I had ever seen. There are foods of every kind. I gape, turning to look at Mrs. Dawson.

"I didn't know what you would want, so I asked our cook to make a bit of everything." she says, smiling over at me.

"Um, t-thank you." I stutter.

Zach comes down then, reaching around me to grab a plate.

"Geez mom. Are we feeding an orphanage?" he jokes.

"I didn't know what Cora would like." she giggles.

I silently gather food on my plate before sitting down at the table and digging in. Zach and his mother chat animatedly about nothing. I say nothing and make no effort to push myself into the conversation. After dinner is finished, I head back up to my room, stuffing my head back into my math book. A few hours later, I am halfway done with my math homework and about to pull out my hair.

My head shoots up when I hear the door click open, Zach's head pokes through.

"Hey. Can I come in?" he asks.

"Um, sure." I answer.

He enters taking a seat on the foot of the bed.

"I just wanted to talk." he whispers. "Now that I'm here though, everything that I had to say has suddenly vanished."

"Well then why don't we just pick up from where we left off. But this time when we talk, Can we actually talk? I really don't want to fight again." I suggest.

"Okay. Sounds good. Well first off, why didn't you tell me? Why didn't you call me once you woke up?" he says.

"One, I had just woke up and I didn't even know what had happened. Two, like I said before, I didn't know that you cared. You hadn't been acting like it and we were fighting, I just didn't know if I should've." I whisper.

"Cora.... I don't know how many times I have to tell you. I care about you. A lot. You are like a sister to me and when I found out that you almost died, my heart nearly stopped. They told me that you weren't gonna make it. I almost lost you, Cora." he huffs.

"Okay. I know. They told you that I had died?" I mutter.

"Yeah, I was coming to say goodbye to you that day. " he sighs, running his hands through his hair.

"Goodbye?" I whisper

"Miss. Monroe said that you weren't gonna make it. She said that they were accepting people to say goodbye." he answers.

"I-I didn't know that they told you that... I didn't know that I was that bad." I stutter.

"I didn't know what to do or what to say, but I was just praying that I misheard. When I got here and they told me that you were awake, I felt like I won the lottery. That is what you make me feel." he murmurs.

My face heats up at the thought.

"You mean so much to me and it kills me even to think that you thought for a second that I didn't care." he mumbles.

I can't think of anything good to say, so I stay silent.

He sits there for a minute staring at me.

"Please say something." he begs.

"Um...can you help me with my math homework?" I ask.

He stares blankly at me, before bursting into laughter. A smile pulls at my lips and I struggle to remain serious.

"Yes, I will help you on your math homework. I'll try my best to spend more time with you and try to distance myself from her more." he chuckles, "Are we good now then?"

"Sure, we're good." I mumble, blushing.

I make him feel?
