Mr Edward Allen the special burns unit surgeon consultant checked the grafts on Tony Parkers back and legs.

“They seem to be healing nicely Mr Parker. I think we can discharge you in a few weeks once you can get around with those crutches properly.

“I won’t be leaving with them Mr Allen. “ When I leave here it will be under my own steam or not at all.”

“We will see; until then carry on with your physiotherapy and I will see you again in two weeks.

“Thank you for all you have done for me Doc’.

“You’re welcome and good luck.”

Later that day there was a letter from the MOD which his mother brought him when she came with his father to visit.

He opened it and quickly read it then passed the letter to his parents to read.

The 3rd Para regiment were awarding him the Military Cross for bravery in the field of battle. They were also giving him and honourable discharge. He was ordered to attend at the barracks at Catterick on the 3rd of December to receive his award.

“What am I to do now mam; they are putting me on the scrap heap?

“Tony there is other jobs you can do. You are intelligent and have learned a variety of different skills.”

“The Para’s has been my life mam and now they are throwing me on Civvie Street.”

“Maybe they can offer you a desk job?

“Mam I’m not a desk man I’m a soldier for Christ sake.”

“I’m only making a suggestion son.”

“I know that mam, I’m sorry.”

“You will have your pension and I’m sure you will receive some compensation for your injuries said his father.

“I need to work dad; I need the Para’s and my mates.”

“You will always have your mate’s son and I’m sure you will see them again.”

The nurses came around with tea so Toney’s mother and father left they never showed him the other letter that had arrived from Suzanne’s solicitor telling him that his marriage was now dissolved; that would keep for another day.
