6. The Next Morning: Telling Gabe

The next morning, I half woke up and rolled over, only to bump into a big body next to me. I screamed a bit in shock and woke the great lump up. He rolled over to face me, nearly squashing me in the process, and smiled blearily at me. The shock of him being there had woken me up properly, but now, as my brain kicked into gear, I remembered what had happened and why Gabe was in my bed.

"So, how are you this morning, sleepy head?" I asked.

"Hey! What do you mean?" he replied, "How am I the only sleepy head when you just woke up as well?"

"Okay, okay, calm down, grumpy boxers. I was only asking how you were on this very fine morning!"

"You numptie! I'm fine, how are you?"

"Good. What would you not tell me last night?" I shot in, hoping it would be nothing, and I could get the sinking feeling off my chest that he was going to tell me something bad.

"Oh, well..." he murmured, his face falling.

"Come on! You know you can tell me anything right?"

"Well, you know how I go to school a long way away, and you can only see me at half terms and holidays?"

"Yes..." I answered, in uncertainty.

"Well, how would you feel I you could only see me in holidays? And if I was a lot further away? Like, an aeroplane ride away."

"I don't know. Why?"

"So, you see, I've kinda been offered a place at... Well, it's a big thing, 'cause I can go to..." I wondered WHAT on earth Gabe was talking about. "And it's a very long way away, across the ocean, to America, almost 3.5 thousand miles." Now I was getting sort of excited. I wondered if he was talking about what I thought he was talking about. "And, it gives me a chance to do what I've always wanted to do... But I wondered if you'd be... Sort of... Jealous?" Now I knew exactly what he was talking about. I was going to burst with excitement. I could barely keep the grin off my face. "Are you okay?" he asked.

"Justsayitsayitsayit!"

"Okay, then... I've been offered a place at.... NYBA, I mean, I hope you're alright with that-"

"Yaaaaaaaaaaaaay!!" I jumped up and bounced on the bed, landing with a plop next to him, and I slipped my arms around him and squeezed.

"Fran!" he whispered, breathlessly, "Cina, Cina! Let me go! Can't breathe!" I let him go. "What's with the happy face? You want me to go to New York without you?"

"Metoometoometoometoometoometoo!"

"What?"

"ME TOO! I'M IN TOO!"

"As in, in in? In the school? You got a letter?"

"Yesssssssss!" I hugged him again. "Yay! Now we can go together! Wait - have you done the exam yet?"

"Urm, yes."

"Oh. I haven't. Why did you keep it a secret?"

"Well I didn't want you to be jealous, or for me not to get in, then it have all been for nothing."

"Of course you got in. But what if I don't?"

"You will! You can't not! You're so good they'd be stupid to say no!"

"Thank you." I said quitely. He was so supportive of me. He hugged me close, and squeezed me gently. Everything was going right.

All through the rest of the day I could not keep the smile off my face. After he left that afternoon, along with his sister, I danced and leaped about the house, overjoyed that everything was going right for once. But then my mum called for me to come and do the washing. I trooped into the utility and started sorting the darks from the washing basket into colours.
