Until the very End

25. The Two Towers - Chapter 2

We walked into Fangorn Forest and Gimli runs over to a leaf which had some dark liquid on it, he tastes it and spits it out "Orc blood!" he tells us. We jump across a small creak and run on the other side "These are strange tracks" Aragorn informs us, "The air is so close in here" Gimli points out, "This forest is old. Very old. Full of memory...and anger" Legolas tells us. Bass voices are heard from the trees, Gimli raises his axe "The tress are speaking to each other" I point out. "Gimli!" Aragorn hisses, "Lower your axe" Legolas tells the dwarf and he does what he says. "They have feelings, my friend. The Elves began it: waking up the tress, teaching them to speak" I say to Gimli, "Talking trees. What do trees have to talk about, hmm? Except the consistency of squirrel droppings" Gimli asks. "Aragorn. Legolas, nad no ennas!" I tell them as I walk forward (Something is out there) "Man cenich?" Aragorn asks me (What do you see) my eyes dart to the right, while Legolas's dart to the left. "The White Wizard approaches" Legolas and I say at the same time, "Do not let him speak. He will put a spell on us!" Aragorn says. I slowly unsheathe my daggers, Aragorn wraps his hand around the hilt of his sword, Gimli tightens his hold on his axe, and Legolas fingers his arrow, "We must be quick" Aragorn whispers to us. The four of us turn around to attack, but we get blinded by a bright light emanating from the White Wizard. Gimli's axe and Legolas's arrow are deflected and Aragorn and I drop our weapons as they become hot in our gasp. "You are tracking the footsteps of two young Hobbits" the Wizard says, "Where are they?" I demand, "They passed this way, the day before yesterday. They met someone they did not expect. Does that comfort you?" the Wizard asks us, "Who are you? Show yourself?" Aragorn says. The light dims, revealing Gandalf, dressed in white. "It can not be" I whisper, Legolas bows to Gandalf "Forgive us. We mistook you for Saruman" Legolas apologizes, "I am Saruman. Or rather Saruman as he should be" Gandalf tells us. "You fell!" Aragorn points out, "Through fire. And water. From the lowest dungeon to the highest peak, I fought him, the Balrog of Morogth. Until at last, I threw down my enemy and smote his ruin upon the mountainside. Darkness took me. And I strayed out of thought and time. Stare wheeled overhead, and every day was as long as the life age of the earth. But it was not the end. I felt light in my again. I've been sent back until my task is done" Gandalf informs us. "Gandalf!" I call his name, "Gandalf? Oh yes. That's what they used to call me. Gandalf the Grey. That was my name. I am Gandalf the White. And I come back to you now, at the turn of the tide" he tells us.

We walk back through the forest with Gandalf leading us, "One stage of your journey is over, another begins. War has come to Rohan. We must ride to Edoras with all speed" Gandalf tells us, "Edoras? That is not short distance!" Gimli mumbles. "We hear of trouble in Rohan. It goes ill with the King" Aragorn says to Gandalf, "Yes, and it will not be easily cured" he tells him, "Than we have run all this way for nothing? Are we to leave those poor hobbits here in this horrid, dark, dank tree-infested-" Gimli says but was cut off from the tress rumbling. "I mean charming, quite charming forest" Gimli corrected himself.  Gandalf turned around and faced Gimli "It was more than mere chance that bought Merry and Pippin to Fangorn. A great power has been sleeping here for many long years. The coming of Merry and Pippin will be like the falling small stones that starts an avalanche in the mountains" he says, "In one thing you have not changed, dear friend" I say and Gandalf raises an eyebrow "You still speak in riddles" I say and we both laugh. "A thing is about to happen here that has not happened since the Elder Days. The Ents are going to wake up and find that they are strong" Gandalf tells us, "Strong? Oh, that's good" Gimli mumbles, "So stop your fretting Master Dwarf. Merry and Pippin are quite safe. In fact, they are far safer than you are about to be" Gandalf informs Gimli as he starts to walk off with Aragorn and myself behind him. "This new Gandalf's more grumpy than the old one" I hear Gimli whisper to Legolas.

We walk out of Fangorn and Gandalf lets a piercingly whistle, a neigh is heard and a white horse appears from the plains, with Nuala running behind him. "That is one of the Mearas, unless my eyes are cheated by some spell" Legolas says, the horse stops in front of Gandalf while Nuala stops in front of me. "Shadowfax. He's the lord of all horses, and has been my friend through many dangerous" Gandalf informs us. We all mount our horses and ride across the plains.
