Until the very End

42. The Return of the King - Chapter 9

Naevys's P.O.V

After along march, we finally come in sight to the Black Gates. We stop marching as we see that we are unopposed, "Where are they?" Pippin asks as the Black Gates seem to be deserted. Aragorn nudges his horse towards the Black Gates and Gandalf, Eomer, Legolas and I all follow him. "Let the Lord of the Black Gates come forth! Let justice be done upon him!" Aragorn address the large gates, the gate creaks open and a single rider appears upon a dark horse. The only part of the rider appearing, beside a full helmet and armor, is a grotesque mouth. "My master, Sauron the Great, bids you welcome. Is there any in this rout with the authority to treat with me?" the Mouth asks, "We do not come to treat with Sauron, faithless and accursed. Tell your master this: The armies of Mordor must disband. He is to depart these lands, never to return" Gandalf tells the Mouth of Sauron. "Old Greybeard. I have a token I was bidden to show thee" he says and holds up Frodo's Mithril shirt, "Frodo" Pippin whispers as the Mouth of Sauron throws the shirt. I catch it just before it hits the ground, "Frodo!" Pippin shouts his name, "Silence!" Gandalf tells him, "No!" Merry cries and he also got told to be silence. "The halfling was dear to thee, I see. Know that he suffered greatly at the hands of his host. Who would've thought one so small could endure so much pain? And he did, Gandalf. He did" the Mouth tells us, I hand the shirt to Gandalf as the Mouth laughs wickedly. Aragorn causally rides to the Mouth's side, "And who is this? Isildur's heir? It takes more to make a king than a broken Elvish blade" he tells Aragorn, but with a quick, hard slice. Aragorn cuts the Mouth of Sauron's head with his sword, "I guess that concludes negotiations" Gimli says. "I do not believe it. I will not" Aragorn tells us. Slowly the Black Gates creaks and sway open, revealing an army of marching Orcs. Barad-Dur looms in the background, its Eye fix on Aragorn, "Pull back! Pull back!" Aragorn shouts and we ride back to the waiting army of men.

The men start to become unsettled as the Orcs pour out of the Gates, "Hold your ground! Hold your ground" Aragorn tells them. "Sons of Gondor! Of Rohan! My brothers! I see in your eyes the same fear that would take the heart of me. A day may come when the courage of Men fails, when we forsake our friends, and break all bonds of fellowship, but it is not this day. An hour of wolves and shattered shields when the Age of Men comes crashing down, but it is not this day! This day we fight! By all that you hold dear on this good earth, I bid you stand, Men of the West!" Aragorn address the army, the soldiers draw out their swords as the Orc army gets closer. I dismount Nuala and stroke her neck, "Your free to go" I tell her. She snorts once before nodding her head, like she knows that this might be the end. Shadowfax leads the other horses to safety.

I watch as the Orc masses begin to circle around us. We prepare to get ready for battle, but we can see that the Orcs greatly outnumber us. "Never thought I'd die fighting side by side with two elves" Gimli says as he stands in-between Legolas and I, "What about side by side with two friends?" I ask the dwarf, "Aye, I could do that" he says and the three of us smile at each other.
