Until the very End

18. Chapter 18

In the blue glow of a moonlit night, we climb a twisting staircase around the trunk of a tree, past glimmering lights of silver and blue. We gather before an arch as Haldir steps to one side. A glowing couple, hand in hand, descend to meet us. The Fellowship stares in awe as my mother and farther come before us, Aragorn and I both touch our foreheads in greeting. "The Enemy knows you have entered here. What hope you had in secrecy is now gone. Nine there are here, yet ten there were, set out from Rivendell. Tell me, where is Gandalf? For I much desire to speak with him, I can no longer see him from afar" Celebron speaks, mother flicks her eyes to mine and I stare into them as I look up. "Gandalf the Grey did not pass the borders of this land. He has fallen into shadow" mother points out, to which I slightly nod my head. "He was taken by both Shadow and Flame: a Balrog of Morgoth. For we went needlessly into the net of Moria" Legolas says and Gimli bows his head, sadly. "Needless were none of the deeds of Gandalf in life. We do not yet know his whole purpose" Galadriel says, "Do not let the great emptiness of Khazad-dum fill your heart, Gimli, son of Gloin" mother tells the dwarf, and he looks up from her words, "For the world has grown full of peril. And in all lands, love is now mingled with grief" she says. "What now becomes of the Fellowship? Without Gandalf, hope is lost" Father says, "The quest stands upon the edge of a knife. Stray but a little and it will fail to ruin of all. Yet hope remains while the company is true" Mother says as she smiles at the group, "Do not let your hearts be troubled. Go now and rest for you are weary with sorrow and much toil. Tonight you will sleep in peace" she tells us and we all leave, as we are dismissed.

A join a group of Elves as we sing a lament for Gandalf:
"A Olorin i yaresse
Mentaner i Numeherui
Tirien i Romenori.
Melme noren sina
nura ala
Maiaron i Oiosailla,
Manan elye etevanna
Norie i malanelye?
Ilfirin nairelma
ullume nucuvalme.
Nauve i nauva.
i amar galen
I reniad lin ne mor, nuithannen.

(Olorin who once was
Sent by the Lords of the West
To guard the lands of the East.
Our love for this land
Is deeper than the deeps
Of the sea.
Wisest of all Maiar,
What drove you to leave
That which you loved?
Yet we will cast all away
Rather that submit.
What should be shall be.
No more will you wonder
The green fields of this earth
Your journey has ended in darkness.)

I walk past the Fellowship until I stop in behind Aragorn, "I know why you are here" he says as he turns around to face me. "You cannot bind yourself to me. Forsaking the immortal life of your people" he tells me as he runs his fingers across my pendant, "I would rather share one lifetime with you than face all the ages of this world alone" I tell him as I give him my pendant "I chose a mortal life" I whisper. "You cannot give me this" Aragorn presets, "It is mine to give to whom I will...like my heart" I tell him. Aragorn brings me in slowly as he looks at my lips and then back into my eyes, I stand up onto my tiptoes and place my lips against his. He wraps his arms around my waist and draws my body, deepening the kiss. We we're bought out of our moment by a cough, I look behind me to see my Farther standing there, "Come Naevys. Take a walk with me" he says. I give Aragorn a peak on the lips before joining my father's side.
