15. Chapter 15

We walk back down the mountain and towards Moria. Gandalf and I were leading the Fellowship as we walk through a misty and rocky valley, "Frodo, come and help a lady" I say and he walks up to my side and I put my arm around him. "How's your shoulder?" I ask him "Better than it was" he tells me, "And the Ring?" I question as I pause and look down to Frodo. "You feel its power growing don't you? I've felt it too. You must be careful now. Evil will be drawn to you from outside of the Fellowship and I fear from within" I warn him, we both look up as a member walks past us. "Who do I then trust?" Frodo questions, looking worried. "You must trust yourself. Trust your own strength" I tell him "What do you mean?" he asks, "There are many powers in the world for good or for evil. Some are greater than myself and Gandalf. And against some we have not yet been tested" I tell Frodo. "Ah! The walls of Moria!" Gimli shouts as he points to them, we all look to where he is pointing to see a sheer flat cliff face. "Dwarf doors are invisible when closed" Gimli says as he taps the wall with his axe, "Yes Gimli! Their own masters cannot find them, if their secrets are forgotten!" Gandalf says "Why doesn't that surprise me" Legolas mumbles, I giggle at his comment and he smirks in return. Gandalf walks up to a smooth part of the wall and rubs his hand over it, "Ah...let me see...Ithildin. It mirrors only starlight and moonlight" he says while looking up into the night sky. Suddenly a door shines brightly with elvish writing above it on the arch "It reads, 'The doors of Durin, Lord of Moria, speak friend and enter" Gandalf reads, "What do you suppose that means?" Merry questions "Oh it's simple. If you are a friend, you speak the password and the doors will open" he tells Merry. Gandalf hold his staff in the middle of the doors "Annon Edhellen, edro hi ammen!" he says (Gate of the Elves, open now for me) nothing happens, Gandalf holds both his hands up "Fennas Nogothrim, lasto beth lammen" Gandalf says (Doorway of the Dwarf-folk, listen to the word of my tongue) but again nothing happened. Gimli grunts and I look down to him "Nothing's happening" Pippin points out for me. Gandalf walks up to the doors and push on them "I once knew very spell in all the tongues of elves, men and orcs" he informs us, "What are you going to do then?" Pippin questions him, "Knock your head against these doors Peregrin Took! And if that does not shatter them I'm allowed a little peace from foolish questions, I will try to find the opening words" Gandalf snaps.

We all sit down as Gandalf still tries to open the doors, Aragorn and Sam are letting Bill go as the Mines are no places for a pony. I hear a splash from my right, I jump up and catch Merry's arm before he could let another rock fly into the lake, "Do not disturb the water!" I hiss at them as I watch the lake with concern. I watch the water as ripples start to appear, Aragorn stands behind me as we both watch it. "Its a riddle!" I hear Frodo say just as the ripples turn into small waves, "Speak friend...and enter. What's the elvish word for friend?" Frodo asks "Mellon" I say without looking away from the waves. A crack is heard and the doors swing open, I push Merry and Pippin away from the shore and towards the door, while I trail behind. I look back at the lake before entering.
"Soon Mr Elf, you will enjoy the fabled hospitality of the dwarves. Roaring fires! Malt beer! Red meat of the bone! This my friend is the home of my cousin Balin and they call it a Mine!" Gimli says, "This isn't a mine, its a tomb" Boromir says while looking around. I look down to see corpse of dwarves at our feet, I pull an arrow from a skeleton "Goblins!" I hiss as I throw it to the ground and notch my own arrow in my bow. Aragorn and Boromir draw their swords while Legolas loads his bow, "We make for the gap of Rohan. We should never have come here. Now get out of here! Get out!" Boromir shouts and for once I agree with him. "Naevys!" I hear my name being called by Sam, I turned around to see them slashing at a tentacle "Naevys!" Merry shouts my name as it comes again for Frodo. Legolas and I release our arrows at the tentacle but it does not let go of Frodo. "Naevys! Aragorn!" Frodo screams our names from up in the air, Aragorn and Boromir slash their way into the water while Legolas shoot from ashore. I put my bow away and leap onto a tentacle that came my way, I stand up and jump onto the next one. I get my dagger out as the tentacle I'm standing on swings towards Frodo, I slash the one that held Frodo and he fell into the arms of Boromir. "Naevys!" Aragorn shouts my name and I dive into the water, "Into the Mines!" I hear Gandalf shout as I resurface. Aragorn grabs my arm and helps me out of the water, together we ran into the Mine with the creature following us. It tears at the doorway, bringing it crashing down and blocking the entrance and surrounding us in darkness. Gandalf lights his staff "We now have but one choice, we must face the long dark of Moria. Be on your guard, there are older and fouler things than orcs in the deep places of the world" he tells us as he takes the lead, "Quietly now, its a four day journey to the other side. Let us hope our presence may go unnoticed" he says.
