George is diagnosed with Asperger syndrome, a type of Autism. He has been going to a boy's boarding school since he was seven. The other boys bully him, and he can't control his emotions properly.

One day he meets the strange and mysterious Sam, the only boy he's really ever known who doesn't tease him or try to make him angry. So what will happen when George starts to fall for this wonderful and distant boy?

15. Miss Palton

Miss Palton again. I see how protective George and Sam are of each other, and immediately agree to help. That night, before I go back to bed – they had to wake me up – I find some clothes for them in the morning.

The next day, I go straight to the infirmary – to find them asleep as if they’re looking up at the stars. I shake them awake gently and give them the clothes (George’s own and some of mine for Sam). I leave them, saying that they must stay here, that no one knows they’re here. I hurry along to the Head’s office, bracing myself for what I must do next. I cross my fingers, glad that the Head is kind behind the scary mask.

Once I’ve repeated the story in the smallest number of words possible, I ask the Head for the phone number of George’s mother. I thought she would be the best person to deal with the affair in hand. Of course, she agrees to search for Mrs Toltwood, Sam’s mum (I made the connection when Sam explained that she had run away – the police came looking for her at the school around six months ago). I managed to persuade the Head to let George and Sam spend the day outside. After much wearing down, she finally agrees, but only if they did something ‘educational’. I run back to tell them and they jump up and down holding hands like little kids. I help them sneak out of the back door and promise to cover for George.

A few hours into the afternoon, I hear back from Mrs Laycam (George’s mother). She has found out where Mrs Toltwood lives! As it happens, she lives just across town from George himself! I decide to keep it a secret from Sam and George for now and start conversing with Mrs Laycam about when she can come and pick them up.
