2. Chapter 1

"Four!" I yelled at him to stop. He was slowly advancing towards a large group of Dauntless, with their guns raised and their radar was alert for Divergents.

My back pressed against the wall as I risked a peek around the corner. Four was crouched behind a wall, looking for a chance to break through the crowd. He noticed me staring at him and mouthed, "It's gonna be okay." I hope that was true as I heard another gunshot.

I sat down and listened for any footsteps. Four was still eyeing the Dauntless.

I looked down and saw that my hands were shaking uncontrollably. They were pale and freezing. I looked up again and saw Four staring at me and counting down with his fingers. Counting down the seconds until he would run out and start shooting.

As his last finger went down, he swiftly stood up, closed his eyes, took a deep breath, and charged.

I looked around the corner, trying to make out what was going on. A bullet grazed Four's neck and another barely passed his ear.

I heard heavy footsteps behind me and swung around. A Dauntless. My gun was in my hand before he had a chance to strike. Both our guns were raised and we just kept circling around each other, seeing who would dare to make the first move.

I know he was probably thinking that I was just another one of those girls that wouldn't shoot anyone and would start crying about little things. Well, I was going to teach him a lesson.

My right arm swung out and smashed his face. As he was bent over in pain I grabbed his gun and shot him point blank in the head. I put my other gun in its holster and started running towards Four.

The last Dauntless was on the ground when I arrived on the scene. Four's breathing was heavy and sweat was trickling down his neck and forehead.

He grabbed my arm and quickly said "Tris, we need to run. They'll find us soon."

We ran for a while before I stopped to catch my breath. I started jogging again when I heard a thump. I turned around but it was too late.

I screamed in protest as ropes were tied around our ankles and wrists, and gags were stuffed in our mouth. The gags gave off a sweet sickly smell that made me choke.

That's when my eyesight when black.
