7. Chapter 7

Her last plea set me off. I bolted out of the Glade and into the maze. People tried to stop me, but Dauntless just shook their heads. I heard David tell me to stop but I ignored his yells. A couple of people called me crazy, some called me insane, I blocked it out and carried on running. The crack of the doors closing stopped the Gladers' screams  following me into the dark depths of the maze. Ivy coated the walls and the floor. It was odd how the maze seemed so old, like it'd been there for hundreds of years. Rocks crumbled from the walls, threatening to dig into my skull and my brain. Blood trickled down my face from a rock smashing into my head. I ran and ran, for hours it seemed, the voice getting louder with every step.My vision blurred and I knew I couldn't run any further. I got a small glimpse of her bright blue eyes looking straight into mine, the voice was real.

Pushing myself up, I staggered towards the figure that waited for me. She told me not to come any closer but I knew I had to. All my eyes could see were her lips saying go back, her arms waving we back, her body consumed by fear... tears rolling down her cheeks. She pointed up. Directly above me.

A beast that looked half monster and half machine leapt down. I couldn't see it properly but what I saw was horrifying enough. There was nothing I could do. My mind was being eaten away with fatigue and I felt my eyes closing. It never came. The heavy feeling of my body being crushed under the weight of the beast. I looked up. I saw Alice's striking eyes filled with tears and her long hair by her pale face.

"What were you doing! I told you to stop, I told you so many times to leave! How could you do that to me?" She sounded angry, but relieved at the same time. The beast was in a pile, no more than a few meters away. An ugly green blob sat on top of a metal frame. Eight leg like things had its own torturous use. A syringe on one, a couple for moving, something like a long knife on another. It had no eyes, but a mouth full of sharp, metal teeth.

A simple thank you would suffice. What happened to it then, what did you do?

I did nothing. You did that, not me. And thanks for being my hero, and saving me.

"Your welcome."
