5. Chapter 5

Today was the day. Our Aptitude Tests. The same plane that gave us the supplies took us to a room that was so bright it was blinding. Alice held onto my hand tight with fear. When it was her turn she gave me one last look that tried to cover her fright but her eyes revealed the truth. I watched as she disappeared into a void of light and waited for her to reappear. When she didn't I was overwhelmed with worry. The same doors flung open and I was consumed in the brightness.

One wall was coated in a mirror but the rest were plain. A chair was sat in the middle of the room and next to it was a table with a small glass full of blue liquid. Someone waited for me in there, by the table and chair. His hair was blond and he wore black. Around his ankles were knives, strapped to his trousers. One long, curved, sword-like thing was on his back, another crossed over the top. Bright blue eyes, like Alice's, stood out from the rest of his face.

"Sit down then and let's get on with it." His voice was fairly deep, but nice in a way. "My name's Jayce and I'll be doing your Aptitude Test." He handed me the glass after I sat down. "Drink it, it's part of the test." I tipped the liquid down my throat and then Jayce stuck a needle in my neck. I heard the faint words " Good luck" come from him but then I was out like a light.

I was in a stone room, no windows or doors. Rocks fell from the ceiling and pounded onto my back, head and neck. The walls crumbled apart and revealed light that scorched and burned me. People staggered in, although they didn't look like people. Their skin was red, brown and cracking. They had bald patches on their heads that had fallen out from the heat. Clothes ripped and torn covered none of their bodies.

I had nowhere to go. I didn't know what to do so I bolted at the people and fought my way through them but they seemed endless. Once they were far enough away from me that I could think there was nowhere else to go- Again. They were coming back to me fast so I had to concentrate. Without thinking I leapt from the stone platform and fell.

"This isn't real. I'm gonna be alright." I came to me suddenly, I could do anything in the simulation because it wasn't real. Just a simulation. My body slammed against the ground but I was ok, just like I said I would be. Until now. A large dog came at me, growling and snarling. It sped up and ran. I didn't know what to do so I got up and ran from it.

I came to a dead end and other was no other escape. I had to give up. My eyes were screwed shut and I waited for it. But it never came. I opened my eyes slowly to find not a bloodthirsty beast but a small dog as tall as my shin. I knelt down and placed a hand on its head but as soon as I did it turned back into the huge monster. A group of children came walking towards me and the dog turned and launched itself at them, charging at full speed. I found out something about me then. I couldn't leave innocents to die.

I threw myself on the dog and watched as the children ran away.

I woke up from the simulation and Jayce was waiting to pull me out of the seat. He looked worried and he clearly had to tell me something.

"What were my results?" I needed to know my results. I had to fit in somewhere no matter how different I was.

"Your results were inconclusive. They call it Divergent. You fit in all five factions, Amity, Erudite, Candor, Abnegation and Dauntless. I can't tell you where to go from now, you need to decide for yourself what faction you think is best. Your the second Divergent today and that never happens." Divergent? Why was it such a bad thing to be? How does he know? Second Divergent? Was Alice one as well?

She was right. We were special.
