The Factionless Born

Everyone seemed to have had the choice, the decision to decide where they belonged. Everyone except for us; the factionless born. Born without a faction of origin, without a purpose. Maybe one day things will be different. We will have something to live for. The end of the system, the beginning of something new.

6. Everything's Fine

The blue of the clothes were bright, like they were new. Danielle seemed to pull off the glasses, like the rest of the Erudite that surrounded us. We were within their faction headquarters.

Both of us kept silent. There were cameras everywhere, watching our every movement. Luckily we haven't been discovered, yet. Don't get me wrong, factionless have tried to re-enter a faction before, but we aren't planning on making this permanent.

We walked through the doors . We apparently blend in pretty well, even the Erudite don't notice, at least they don't show signs that they do. We walk up to the front desk. "Excuse me miss." Danielle was talking to the woman working at the desk.

She looked up. "Can you tell us where to find James David?" Her voice was sweet, different from her usual one. The woman typed letters into her computer for a minute. She smiled up at us. "May I get your names please?"

I gulped. We hadn't planned for her; or anyone, to ask our names. Danielle smiled. "Catherine Parks, and this is my colleague Miss Samantha Porter." I fake a smile. Thank you Danielle.

"Forth floor, fifth door on the left." She pointed to the elevator in the wall. We thanked her.

"What would we say?" I break the silence. She doesn't answer. Her face is blank. I wouldn't have known how to answer either. The ding of the elevator signals our arrival to the forth floor.

We walk towards the fifth door. My heart beat begins to pick up. Door one. My breathing begins to become uneven. Door two. Calm down. Door three. I clench my fists. Door four. "Here we are." Danielle says. The fifth door.

Her knuckles bang against the door. She knocks three times. "Come in." It's his voice. The one I have heard since I was thirteen. Since he became factionless.

Danielle wraps her fingers around the handle and turns it, opening the door. I nearly stop breathing. Danielle closes the door after we enter, locking it. James doesn't look up from his stack of papers.

"Hello Mr. David." Danielle says. His ears perk up. He twitches. "W-what are you d-doing here?" His eyes wide. Our eyes meet. Something inside me snaps.

"What do you mean what are we doing here?! What are you doing here?!" I practically shout. Danielle grabs my arm. "Quiet, someone will hear." I pull my arm away.

He doesn't answer. "Tell me." "You wouldn't understand." His eyes turn away from mine. "What wouldn't I understand?" I ask. "That you betrayed us so you can have this stupid little office?" His eyes avert to Danielle's. Danielle's stare is cold.

Anger. "You were given food, a home, friends-" he cut me off. "What friends?!" He shouted. I was stunned. There was a pause before he spoke again. "You had friends, you had a home." His left eye twitched. "Mine was taken from me."

There was a long silence. He was factionless. His family, friends... they weren't. "That doesn't give-" he cut Danielle short. "What? It doesn't give me any right?!" There was a knock on the door. "Is everything all right Mr. David?" It was a woman's voice.

Danielle and I stayed quiet. James was the only one to speak. "Fine Terese," he spoke. "Everything's fine." He kept eye contact with me. "If you say so Mr. David." Her heels clicking against the floor signaled her leave returning from where she came.

"It's best you leave now before you get caught." He straightened. "I don't know how you came up with a plan to sneak in but I best hope you have one to get out." He twitched again.

Danielle grabbed my arm, "hate to say it, but he's right Riley. We have to go." I didn't argue. I followed her out the door after saying one last thing. "I hate you."
