The Factionless Born

Everyone seemed to have had the choice, the decision to decide where they belonged. Everyone except for us; the factionless born. Born without a faction of origin, without a purpose. Maybe one day things will be different. We will have something to live for. The end of the system, the beginning of something new.

10. Coming Together

"-on't know what happened." Eds voice fills the room. "I got up and ran after them and then she was on the ground." My head aches. I touch my cheek. I'm sure there's a bruise.

I groan. "She's awake." It was Evelyn. "Oh my gosh, are you okay?!" It was Danielle. My face contorts. "Please, don't." I say referring to her loud voice. "Sorry." She says a bit quieter.

I slowly sit up. "Ah, lay back down." A hand was placed on my shoulder. I look up. Charles. "You need to relax." I lay back down. "Okay." I look at the people around me. Evelyn, Edward, Danielle and Charles. No Travis.

"What happened to you?" Ed asks. I place a hand over my cheek. I don't really remember. "Isn't it obvious?" Danielle asks. I'm sure she was right, the ache in my cheek must look as bad as it feels.

"Who did it' was what I was asking." He said slightly annoyed. "Sure it was." Danielle said under her breath.

"Dauntless, they were testing..." I pause as my head pounds. "...for Divergence." Evelyn's ears perk up. "Divergence?" I nod. I didn't want to talk, it hurt.

"Your absolutely sure they were Dauntless?" She asked. I pause. It was the Erudite looking for the Divergent... are the Dauntless working with them too? "Are yo-" "She needs to rest," Charles cuts her sentence short. "No more questions."

The pounding in my head only got worse. I groan. "Here." Charles holds out a cup of water. I grab it. "Thank you, but not now." I place it on the table next to me.

"You have to drink something," he says sitting next to me. I try to shake my head but stop. Pain pierces my skull. I've never been hit so hard.

"At least try, you haven't eaten anything for two days." I sigh closing my eyes. I haven't had the appetite. "Fine." He stares at me. "Evelyn wants to speak with you after you are better." I sit up. "I better go no-" "I said when you are better." His hand rests on my shoulder.

"I can't just sit here while everything is falling apart!" I try to shout. He smirks. "What?" I ask frustrated. "You think everything's falling apart," he looks back at the door. No one is there. "But really, everything is coming together."

A world with no factions? I'm stunned. Charles told me that Evelyn was planning on taking down the system, destroying it.

"We just need one final piece." He says once he has finished explaining Evelyn's plan. "Final piece?" I ask. He nods. "One person," He says. "Tobias Eaton."

Tobias Eaton. I've heard his name once before. He is Evelyn's only connection left to the factions. He... is Evelyn's son.
