18. ~Chapter 17~

~~"Hey Julia..." Austin says not smiling and puts his hands in his pockets.
"Hi... um.. hold on a sec..." I say and walk inside.
"Dad! How could you do this to me!?" I yell when I'm in.
"What?" He asked grinning.
"My 'window friend' lives next door!" I say.
"Oh. yea. His mom is a friend of mine" He says.
"Why didn't you tell me that?!" I yell.
"You didn't ask, why are you so mad?" He asks.
"I go to school with him and you've been here like a week, how do you know her?" I ask.
"When you were little, we lived in Texas, when you turned 3, we moved to California... She was a friend of your mothers too" He says the last part quietly.
"Oh.." I say and walk back outside.
I saw Alex and Austin whispering to each other but when I came out they immediately stopped.
"Hey neighbor!" Austin says cheerily.
"Hi" I mentally roll my eyes.
Wait. If Austin lives here, Jess lives here!
"Is Jess here?" I ask.
"Yea" He says.
"Can I go talk to her?" I ask.
"Sure" He says and leads me into the house and takes me to her but doesn't leave.
"Go" I say shooing him away with my hands.
I sit next to her.
"Jess I'm really sorry, if you want me to stay away from your brother, I will. I know you were only trying to help me, I should've listened." I say.
"Don't apologize, I should be the one saying sorry, I shouldn't have tried to keep you away from him... it's just, all of my friends are gone. They used me, to get to him" She says.
"I understand, and I won't talk to him or hang out with him anymore" I say.
"No, if you want to, I'm not going to stop you. He's actually not that bad. But don't tell him I said that" She says.
I laugh.
"I won't, and I don't want to hang out with him. I'd rather not lose you as a friend, I'm not that stupid" I say.
"Just do whatever you want okay?" She says.
"Okay, come on, you want to help me move?" I ask.
"Where are you moving?" She asks.
"You'll see" I say.
I go outside and tell my dad I'm going to the apartment. Jess and I get in my car as he watches Sophia.
"Why is there a carrier in the back?" She asks.
"For my baby sister" I say.
"I didn't know you had a baby sister" She said.
"Yea... my dad has her right now. I don't live alone anymore" I say.
"You don't have to tell me... but why were you living alone?" She asks.
I think I can trust her. She apologized when I was the one who should've been saying sorry. It doesn't really matter. I don't even completely know why I tried to hide my life. I guess I was just scared people would pity me. A new girl who lives by herself, has to care for her baby sibling, her mother died, and her father disappeared. I would feel sorry for me, only if it wasn't me.
"Julia?" She asks.
"Sorry... um well" I started, "When I lived in California, there was an earthquake. I was in my room with my little sister Sophia when it happened. My mom, being a mom, instead of looking for shelter for herself was in her room, but ran out to make sure we were okay"
I felt tears sting my eyes as I was reliving the moment. I've had these flashbacks since the day it happened, whether I'm daydreaming, or dreaming.
"You don't have to tell me" She says seeing my pain.
"I was in the doorway already with my sister... s-she was running toward.... us. But th-the" I couldn't finish I was choking on my words now.
"Julia, seriously, stop, you can tell me when you're ready okay?" She says and touches my shoulder assuringly.
"The ceiling collapsed on her" I choke out ignoring what she told me.
"I'm so sorry" She says.
I laugh and wipe my tears.
"I have my dad now" I say.
She doesn't say anything, knowing if she does, I'll just continue. I pull up in front of my apartment. I still have to tell the landlord. I don't have a lease, so it will be okay to leave, I'll just tell the landlord.
"I'm okay" I say and wipe the last of my tears.
"My dad disappeared about a year ago, when my mom was still pregnant with Sophia. I just found out he was accused of murdering someone, but they caught the right guy about a week ago, my dad found my work today and my boss called me so I could come down and see him" I say.
"I'm so happy for you" She says.
"I'm just glad he came" I say.
"Wait. If you lived in California, how'd he find you in Texas?" She asks.
"I wrote a note, and left it where only he would think to look, in case he ever came back, telling him where I would be" I say.
"What made you choose Texas?" She asks.
"It's the only place no one would think to look for me, my mom's friends that is" I say.
"Why?" She asks.
"They were going to put Sophia in foster care, she was the only family i had left, or so I thought" I say.
"Oh..." She says.
I shrug and get out of the car. She follows and we go into the apartment and get a lot of little things packed and loaded into the car. Most of the big stuff my dad will have to get. He has a pickup truck. We get back in the car and I drive to our new house.
"I'm just glad I have some help with Sophia now" I say.
"You could have asked me, you know" She says.
"I know... but I was just scared" I say.
"Of what?" She asks.
"People feeling sorry for me, I don't like that" I say.
"Me either, but I'm glad you feel okay with me, and that you trust me because I trust you a lot too" She says.
I smile.
"Wait. I have no idea where I'm going, how do I get back?" I ask.
"How'd you get there without help?" She laughs.
"Well on the way there, my dad drove, and just now, I have no idea. I think I was just looking for the street, it's really not very far" I say.
"True, make a left here" She says.
"Okay" I say and put my turn signal on.
I pull into the driveway and we get out and unload the car.
"I'll go get Alex and Austin to help" She says.
"No, don't" I say.
"Why not?" She asks.
"Because, I'm trying to avoid him" I say.
"Ok..." She says and gets bags out.
I get the rest after making a couple trips and we are done.
"Dad, you need to get the rest, it's just the big stuff now" I say.
"You didn't have a lot of stuff did you?" He asks.
"Not really" I say.
"Well that is all going to change, whatever you make with your job, is for you" He says.
"How can you possibly afford everything if I do that?" I ask.
"I got my old job back, let's just say, I make a good amount of money, if I ever need your help, I'll let you know" He says.
"Thanks dad" I say and hug him.
"Now go have fun, hang out with your little boyfriend or whatever, I'm going to spend some time with Sophia" He says.
"Okay" I say before realizing what he said.
"Dad he's NOT my boyfriend" I say.
"Ok, okay, wait how old is she now?" He asks.
"She is exactly 1 year and 1 day old" I say.
"Oh my, I missed a lot of her life, I need to get it together!" He says.
"Don't worry dad, she knows you as 'daddy' I showed her your pictures and that's what she calls you now... same with mom" I say.
"You did that? You know, you were always my favorite child" He says.
"Dad, I was your only child" I laugh.
"Shush, just go have fun" He says.
"Thanks dad" I say and walk outside and find Jess waiting out there.
"You could have came inside" I say to her.
"I know but it was a moment with you and your dad" She says.
"Oh... well thank you it wasn't really a moment, just our old stupid little jokes" I say.
She laughs.
"You wanna come over and play video games?" She asks.
"Yea! I love video games!" I say.
"I thought you might" She says.
"What games do you have?" I ask.
"Super Mario?" She says.
"I love Super Mario!" I exclaim.
"Good!" She says and we walk in her house.
"Move" She says to Austin and Alex who beat us to the couch.
"No" He says.
"Come on, move, we're gonna play the Wii" She says.
"Oh good, we'll play against you guys" Austin says.
"We don't want to play with boys" I say.
"Sex discrimination!" Alex states.
"Fine, we'll play with you" I say.
"You sure?" Jess asks me.
"Yea" I say.
"Great" Austin says.
